In my experience, sometimes the fit outweighs the pay in the long run.

You are correct. But like I said above. These players are in a profession where they are not guaranteed to be drafted by a team that’s the “right fit” as well. Hell, look at Joe Burrow. I’d have much rather he gone to a serious contender team. Now he and Chase have made a huge impact, but had he gone to a better team like the Stealers, Patriots, or 49ers…. He likely would have a Super Bowl ring by now.

We tried to overpay for him as well. We offered him almost as much as we were offering Underwood.

You keep bitching about his salary like he is paid out of range. Kelly, Stoops, Kiffen, Drink, and Huepel all make about the same. Deboer, Sark, and Kirby make more.

Maybe BK is or isnt the guy but we are only paying average in the class we want to be in…

Is not as simple as "keep up with the market". Kelly explained this.

The market is based on need. One schools needs year to year aren't the same as the next school. So values differ

Saban told you that's literally why he retired
For Saban, i think it was the fact that he couldn't stockpile talent anymore, because Bama would always have had elite 1st teamers and would have always have brought in top 3 recruiting classes. It's having elite depth that made Saban and there's none of that today.
