Kelly is recruiting with a vetting edge!

This, imo, is how to build a program. Combine the careful vetting with a sound day-to-day management, Hallelujah.
Kelly will need the time to purge and refresh, and he is laser focused…

To this point, I often think about this in context of a conversation I had with someone who works on the academic support side for UGA. Kirby Smart came in guns blazing with recruiting and landed a couple elite classes immediately but with a focus on character.
Around recruiting class 3/4, when there was a sense that things were rolling in the program, some of those standards lapsed a bit and it was more of a focus on talent above all else. This person noticed more examples of players not doing the right things in the class room, getting into more trouble, etc. And this was brought up to Kirby by support staff people. So the next couple of classes, they start to put more weight to character than they had.
I don't think it's a coincidence that they won the championship last year and the other previous 3 years they had some slip ups. At the margins, those things matter.

Well having good character is often an indication of how coachable a player is, which is why it is just as important to evaluate character as it is talent. Sure, it's good to have 5 star talent all over the field, but will every one of those guys go just as hard in the film room/class room? Ultimately that's what separates the good athletes from the great ones.

I said this months ago.
Kelly has a different vision.

It’s true but you still have to treat those certain 5* players a little different, you just do. Kirby did with Pickens, CBK does it Boutee, Jimmy Johnson once said every player is not equal and some ways you treat them accordingly. He said you have to know that player. CBK can relate way better than I realized and he WILL return us to elite.
