Good article, but for the life of me I have never been able to figure out how more kids don't go onto college basketball from that area. They produce championship teams literally every year from sabine parish... wake up trent johnson!!

So Trent is supposed to convert a bunch of dumb, thug losers into college students?
That whole area is like a third world country. Those guys have no intention of going to college.

Did someone from there bang your mom or something? Geez.

It seems like most of these kids have 2.0 GPAs and 15 ACT scores (if they even bothered taking the test), so they are not going to be SEC material, or even lower D-1 material. Notice how almost none of these guys are going to other colleges.
It seems like there are tons of places where academics aren't emphasized, but since this area is in the middle of nowhere, the shoe companies haven't come around, and there aren't handlers who can help get at-risk guys qualified, the way they do in Southern LA, the mid-Atlantic, etc.

I've never seen a place with so many D1 caliber players that don't even go juco. They don't even attempt college.

Wow I guess more people need to educate theirselves before posting on here mr. Bubba hotep. I'm from that area and can tell you the area has had it's share of d1 college players. Nick Jacobs from many is a TE on the Lsu football team he was a good bball player but a better fball player. Brandon Palmer played some juco ball @ etbu. Marvin Frazier will be playing d-1 ball next year. I can name several more who have played either d1 bball or juco.

Well you are typing on a computer, so you must be one of the smart ones.
You've named three players. No one is saying that ZERO players go to college from that area. Simply that there is a lot of talent that comes from that area and a small percentage ever makes it to college, for whatever reason: motivation, academics, etc.

I played against his High School team on a regular basis- I graduated a year after Joe and played Zwolle 5-10 each year for 4 years. Joevoskie was very good but there were 2 guys on that team Antonio and Darius that were both better than him. They all 3 had about the same amount of talent but Antonio and Darius showed more hustle. Antonio was ridiculous, I would say around 6'4" area, could jump out of the gym and was DANGEROUS short-mid range jump shot. Darius was around 6'3" and was absolutely lights out beyond the arc. Either way I promise that any of those guys were just as good if not better than our current players.

No, they weren't. At least not better high school players.

I agree with you Tigah32, I'm from Zwolle and my lil bro graduated and grew up with all three of those guys. They were all dominant but Joevoskie just was a beast down low that other teams, especially smaller class B teams, just couldn't handle. Antonio was definately the more athletic of the three. We won't see a starting five like those teams had for quite some time, they were just sick.

quote:No small town to the north called Converse, we weren't very good at basketball, way more of a baseball school. That starting 5 was insane though. I wathced Desoto High School out of Dallas play that year and after what I saw I believe that, that Zwolle team could have won the 5A state championship in Texas. Not being biased either, overall they were just as if not more talented than the other schools and very well coached. Not to mention their conditioning was the excellent, all the guys were in tip-top shape.
