Why without having seen him play at all at LSU, or even practice for that matter, are you already sure that he isnt a good QB?

I thought Foster followed Crowton to Maryland?

no, just profiling really.

hopefully he is more DJ SHockley/Troy Smith than Reggie McNeal/Marcus Vick/Reggie Ball
he looks raw as a passer like the latter guys at this point to me though and too good of an athlete to waste in our offense at QB

Im not sure he is a good QB yet.. But he does have tools to be a good QB and after 2 or 3 years learning and being coached by coach Kragthorpe I think he could be a good QB for us. Just because he is black and fast doesnt automatically mean he is the next Marcus Vick

has kragthrope ever coached a dual threat with his athleticism?
Posted on 6/21/11 at 9:46 pm to Lester Earl
Isnt JJ sort of comparable to Randall, at least with athleticism? If he can groom JJ into a solid QB by this year then theres no doubt he can do it with Randall, IMO. Randalls QB tools are better than JJs to me

No, Randall is faster and has a stronger arm.

Im aware of this...
I was just trying to think of any QBs that Krag has coached that were similar to Randall in athleticism

I agree. It looks like he has decent mechanics and a quick release. It isn't like he is just an athlete running around using his feet to buy time and slinging the ball around. I could see him staying at QB for at least a couple years and having a shot to beat Rivers out.

JJ is athletic, but he is so damn mechanical in every phase.
Randall is fluid. Could easily play another position.
JJ, no way.
maybe Randall will be a good QB, who knows. He will need to be a passing threat and not someone who solely relies on his feet.

One thing that Randall has on Jefferson is his release. Jefferson has to wind up. Randall has a quick release.

Link to him throwing 80 yards?

There aren’t many guys like him who can run a 4.4 and throw the ball 80 yards down the field. But there is more to playing quarterback than that. He knows it and he’s hungry.

I'm sure J. Randall has a much quicker release than Jefferson--it seems like every QB does. He has one of the slowest releases I've ever seen. He reminds me of a baseball pitcher winding up. I hope Kragthorpe can do something about that.

This^ Great comment. JJ is very mechanical.Randall does look a lot more fluid definitely.

His head coach said he throws it 80 yards. Not a boom. A boom is video of him throwing 80 yards.

Randall, who opened plenty of eyes when he won the camp's long-distance passing competition with an 81-yard throw.
Here are the highlights from the article:
quote:
Randall, who at 6-2 ½ and a wiry 189 pounds is rated the 10th-best dual-threat quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com
quote:
Led his team to one of the most remarkable turnarounds in the state, going from 2-8 in 2008 to 12-1 and the Class 2B state semifinals.
quote:
Five days of summer school in Maui with Hall of Famer Joe Montana. ``Joe Montana is a real cool guy. My daddy says he's the most famous guy I've met. I never watched him play. But I know who he is, how he won a few Super Bowls, threw a lot of touchdowns to Jerry Rice. [Montana] taught me a few plays that I brought back with me.
quote:
a big promise from Oregon coach Chip Kelly, who told Randall, a senior at Chaminade-Madonna, he plans to turn him into one of the greatest quarterbacks in Pac-10 history.
Some comments from his coach:
quote:
"His big thing this summer was trying to become a total quarterback. It was about getting him to read defenses better, get him ready for college." He's proven he can be a great high school quarterback. There aren't many guys like him who can run a 4.4 and throw the ball 80 yards down the field. But there is more to playing quarterback than that. He knows it and he's hungry. He wants to take it all up a notch.''
quote:
"Coach Tyrell booked me a lot of visits", Randall said. ``But I'm not going to take any. Chip said when you're engaged with a girl, you don't go [sleeping with] other girls. He said he's going to keep his commitment to me as long as I keep it to him. Even if I get hurt, I'd still have a scholarship.''

quote:
"If it wasn't going to be Oregon, I told Chip I was thinking about going to Florida to play receiver," Randall said. ``I told him I wouldn't mind being the next Percy Harvin or something. But he said he could turn me into the one of the greatest QBs ever in the Pac-10. I said `OK coach, do your magic and I'll come with it."
Well all of this certainly adds some fire to this debate
