Wow really interesting article from J. Smith today regarding our last 4 spots especially considering Foster's tweet today. At the end he even states if we miss out on either Chase or Joseph that the next man up would be Glenn Beal.

Sorry if this is Germans.

"Even with all the personnel moves, LSU coaches have been on the road checking on highly sought prospects Patrick Surtain Jr., Ja'Marr Chase, Mario Goodrich and Kelvin Joseph."

Why are people nervous that we would miss out on Joseph? Is he supposed to be waivering on his commitment?

He still might take a visit to Alabama, from what I understand, but nothing else to indicate he's anything other than solid.

Because Foster, like Joiner, was trolling LSU the whole time.

Joiner had his chance. Kelvin is not going to bama, people need to relax

Don't count on Foster... I doubt he is coming to LSU. He's more than likely going to Bama or FSU.

With all the conversation concerning the uncertainty around four of the five major targets I have a question. in a worst case scenario let’s assume that only 1, 2, or 3 of the five sign this year. This would leave 1, 2, or 3 scholarships unsigned. Considering the quality and depth of next year’s in state recruiting class would it be possible for LSU to sign 26, 27 or 28 and have 1, 2, or 3 enroll early and count them toward this year’s class? I’m not sure how all this works but if that is a possibility then maybe it would not be such a terrible thing to not use all 25 scholarships this time.
OK – I am stupid and ignorant so forgive me.

Not that the poster is suggesting this, but if he were to go to Alabama and they win another National Championship it is GOOD FOR THE SEC.

At least that is what I hear and see posted here from time to time.

While you will likely hear all kinds of bullshite about max 25 hard cap, yes, you can still back count EEs if you haven't used your allotment.

My take I hope Goodrich is in our class because he is an absolute baller. Wherever he goes "come on Tigers" he will be a big contributor.

That is not what every recruiting expert I follow says. There is a hard cap of 25 per year. I have heard conflicting information on the grad transfer rules.

Heck, there may be free transfers going by next year, but the 25 cap will be the only constraint on rampant transfers.

I am confused. Tell me what I am missing?

Blair Napolitano, LSU's Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance was quoted on www.dandydon.com on Jan. 21, 2018 as follows. "A school can sign more than 25 recruits provided it did not use all 25 signing slots in the previous signing class. In order to be counted in the previous signing class, the signee has to enroll at mid-term and replace a current student-athlete that graduated in December or the previous academic year."

Is this statement in error, am I taking something out of context or simply not understanding what I’m reading?

Thank for your help in helping me understand.

Yeah I thought this time last week Foster was a lock due to how well his visit went. I really feel like the staff pulled the same move with Foster as they did with HJ. We have plenty of options in 19 at QB along with good QB’s already on roster. There’s no need to take Foster if you have a stud like Goodrich still interested! Why take a project instead of someone who has huge potential

Who?

You think Steve Wiltfong knows? LINK

I've seen Sonny Shipp say there's a hard cap, but his information isn't very well sourced ("According to a college coach we spoke to") and the rule book certainly doesn't support that there is a hard cap.

You're not missing anything. That statement is correct. Here's a link to a post with the actual rule so you can see for yourself.

Bolded is relevant to backcounting

Now this doesn't say anything about what it takes to be an EE which he refers to at the end of the paragraph, so you won't see that.

I'm gonna try and make you an expert. It's up to you if you want to be one:

Anybody who signs a promise (eg NLI) of or an award of a scholarship counts.

Exceptions:

o a 2+ yr walk on.

o someone who has already counted. E.g. if Lindsey Scott Jr would return to LSU he wouldn't count. If he goes to MO, he counts against their numbers because he's never counted there.

o Someone who's collegiate career is over before he participates in activities (injury, illness, death ...) isn't counted.

Backcounting is allowed.

That's it. Just knowing this thru the first exception + backcounting will cover 98+% of circumstances and the last 2 should be intuitive.

He's exactly right. As we sit right now, we're looking like Joseph, Surtain and Chase. Fourth spot will go to Goodrich if he wants it. It's a coin flip between us and Georgia right now. And if we miss on him then next in is Beal.
