In state recruits

I've been say for weeks that LSU and Miles will be in trouble if they keep ignoring kids like the below, which is what got Archer in trouble. I agree 100% with DD below. The general concensus on this board is that we are right to pay more attention to out of state 4 star recruits rather than to recruits such as the below, but I believe in fact, we should only supplement with 4 and/or 5 start recruits outside the state (if we can get them) after we have players like the below secured. There is no excuse for not having these kids on the roster. Reed is an exception, because he apparently had his mind made up about getting away and leaving the state after his mother passed away.
DD:
My gut feeling is that Jackson and Fobbs will both sign with A&M because LSU did not start recruiting the two until after they had comitted to A&M. As for Jackson, LSU did not start recruiting him with a lot of energy until last week.
I like this year's recruiting class, but it could have been much better if Les Miles had focussed more on a five- to six-hour drive from LSU rather than recruiting players from Virginia and as far away as California. It is very seldom that recruits who are being recruited by big-time programs in their area or in their state will travel across the country to play for a school with whom they have no family ties. I hope that Les Miles will allow Frank Wilson to focus on recruiting Louisiana and areas within five to six hours of LSU for the 2011 signing class.

Quoted much the same post from the Dandy man on another thread. I'm wondering if this detail-oriented coaching/recruiting staff is in the early stage of losing a handle on LA talent. If so, history says that is a guaranteed disaster in the making that will haunt LSU for years to come.

Marsh and Jackson aren't in the same league talent wise and Marsh has some LA ties so I understand this move.
Fobbs, I understand under recruiting him especially bc Davis and Reed were better a reasonable close to LSU (distance wise) so they were LSU's top priorities.

Ive got to imagine that this staff will approach out of state guys with more caution in the future. How do you not accept the committment of a Mike Davis or a Cassius Marsh? But, it seems that our communication with our in state guys was lacking because of it.
It could also be that Les and Co. thought the LA crop this year was not strong enough to carry the class, and thats why we were aggressive out of state.

Ok, you are right. Every single one of you out there would take Fobbs over Mike Davis and Justin Hunter. On top of that, having Brandon Jackson is much better than taking in Marsh, Ferguson, or Quarles.
People need to realize that...... shite HAPPENS! You can't get them all. Win some, you lose some. Whatever cliche makes you feel better. USC, Florida, Texas, Alabama, etc. They go and get people from all over the country. If they lose out on someone at home and fail to get that out-of-state kid, oh well. To compete for titles, you have to get the best talent, then COACH up that talent. If LSU just signs kids form LA, they would not compete for titles. Tell Peterson, Shepard, Tolliver, Loston, etc., to F*ck Off because LSU only recruites in state.
Some of you people either don't know, don't care, or just suck at life. GET OVER IT!

You recruit the best players, Period..
How many OOS players is Bama pulling in each year...ain't no way their state has that much talent to share with AU...
Boone and Copeland are better players than Fobbs and Jackson... it's not even close with Jackson and Copeland

They are going to A&M, not the SEC West. That's all I need to know.

On the one hand we want LSU to be a dominating national power , competing for SEC and National Titles - > this requires that we try and recruit the best players regardless of geography. The risk/gain is high here and we have to do this to be in the elite level.
On the other hand we have this obsession about taking any and all LA boys which is ok for a program that wants to be at a good but not great level.

I looks like LSU is merely going after the best players, and I do not believe that they are ignoring in-state talent. I say this, because LA talent was down in 2010, and LSU has already gone after and gotten verbals from the biggest names in LA talent for 2011. I think that goes to show us all that guys like Collins, Johnson, Landry, Rasco, Hilliard, etc. are the cream of the national crop and will all be national recruits because of that.
With all that being said, it doesn't really seem like we're losing a handle on the in-state talent (at all). If the 2011 rankings came out now, we'd obviously be #1 and would most likely have somewhere between 900-1200 points on Rivals (about a third of UF's 2010 class total, as of right now) - ALL of our commitments thus far for 2011 are in-state prospects.
It would've been really nice to keep some of those dishonorable individuals that de-committed from LSU in 2010, and it would've been nice to include with them guys like Reed, Fobbs, and Jackson.
LSU's future in regards to recruiting is VERY bright, though, as we've already locked down a bunch of the top players in the state for 2011. IF we can get verbals from Rasco, Robinson, and Boutte in coming weeks, we'll be primed to have the #1 class in the nation for 2011.

This is my exact point Cal. Thank you!
Some people want to have it both ways. And when next year rolls around with the amazing talent that this state has, they will come out in droves saying, "See, I told you LSU can stay in state and have great recruiting classes!"
Next year will be an anomally to recruiting. More instate talent than the last couple of years combined.

Remember the Archer days well. Didn't some of the high school coaches start sending kids out of state to FSU TN Mich Neb etc...

I've seen tape on Jackson and he is just not that impressive. Its not like he was close to the same quality as Marsh, Copeland,etc... He isn't in the same league. He was always a fall back option.
LSU would've have been crazy not to go after OOS guys that are/were interested in LSU with the poor DT quality in state this year.

No in state commits have decommitted, even with the coaching changes, so I don't see any signs of a problem with LA yet, as long as they focus primarily on LA in the future first. That is not to say you don't take a Spencer Ware when they are available.

JT LSU is doing great recruiting already they have 9 of this year's Advocate Dozen and 6 of next year's dozen. Saban started LSU on the road back by recruiting 7-9 of the Advocate dozen each year, the best 12 players in LA.

The fact is that if you have guys committed at need positions that are from out of state, you need to remain on the instate guys just in case. We completely stopped recruiting Fobbs and Reed for awhile.

Even if not recruited until late, most rational Louisiana kids would still switch over to LSU, rather than waste away at A&M with no hope of a National title or even a divisional title, very little TV and practically no national exposure with the very real possibility of relagation to wasting away into obscurity. So, don't come on here talking about wasting our time on 5 stars from other states. You have to make the effort.

Yea...Another post of damned if you do and damned if you dont.
Had Miles recruited 90% in state and ended up with 70% 3 stars then the board would be up in arms of why he cant recruit OOS.
This goes with the territory of recruiting big fish OOS.
I'll take my chances with Coach Miles' recruiting strategy...

I agree with this, although I do think that Brandon Jackson, in particular, is definitely worth a scholarship. Jackson and Jermauria Rasco have been playing together on the same DL in high school for the last 3 years - I think our odds at landing Rasco, who's looking at LSU and Texas, do increase with a commitment from Jackson. Seeing as how Rasco is a near-lock to be a 5-star commit that's nationally recruited, I think getting Jackson and those increased odds are well worth it.
Rasco is probably the 3rd or 4th best prospect in the state for 2011 - with all the expectations for the next year's class, people are forgetting that LSU is not guaranteed to land all of the state's top prospects. Losing a guy like Rasco to an out-of-state school is really, really going to hurt, if it happens. We should be doing EVERYTHING that we can RIGHT NOW to make Rasco's decision to choose LSU as easy and obvious as possible.

I think we should load up on the best Louisiana recruits if they are as good or better than out of state recruits. That being said the elite programs have to go out of their boundries if they are to stay elite. Alabama for this 2010 recruiting class has 15 out of state recruits of their present 26. Florida has 11 of 25. LSU has 11 of 25. To be the best and compete with the best, you have to get the best whereever you find them and they are not always in your state. For 2011 we have a lot of recruits that will be as good if not better than anything out of state. I think LSU will lock up state recruits early and then concentrate out of state afterwards. Les won't get burned again. Start with your base and then move out.
