The author asked a question: "How well did each team recruit, relative to its established norm?" then developed a baseline for each school, taking the composite recruiting rankings from 2002-2020 and averaging them for each school.

This is the list for SEC schools. The first number is the average composite ranking from 2002 to 2020. The second number is how that school ranked in this years recruting, and the third number is how far off they were from their baseline average. (Negative numbers are very bad.)

Listed from worst to best:

Ole Miss 22.50, 39, -16.50
Missouri 35.65, 50, -14.35
Arkansas 26.38, 30, -3.63
Florida 5.54, 8, -2.46
Mississippi State 26.94, 27, -0.06
South Carolina 20.00, 18, 2.00
Tennessee 12.63, 10, 2.63
LSU 7.24, 4, 3.24
Vanderbilt 57.47, 53, 4.47
Georgia 6.47, 1, 5.47
Alabama 7.63, 2, 5.63
Auburn 13.29, 7, 6.29
Texas A&M 16.69, 6, 10.69
Kentucky 44.13, 23, 21.13

The biggest takeaway from this is that Ole Miss and Missouri did pretty bad while Texas A&M and Kentucky did pretty good.

Worst of the 130 FBS schools? USC
Average ranking: 5
This year: 55
Difference of -50

Man, 18 years is a really long time in the world of recruiting rankings and websites, I'd be really interested to just see the last 10 years or so.

But still, USC

Every sec school did better than usc.

Yet if they win 9 games next year they’ll be in the top 10

Hanging on to Helton, yikes.

It's gonna take a massive hire (e.g. Urban Meyer) to avoid another 3-4 years of down recruiting.

Yea, how Mike Shula recruited at Alabama is really relevant to today.

Maybe once Cali starts paying players they’ll be able to compete

Helton is not the problem with their recruiting. It is their administration toying with him that is. He had Bryce Young committed at one time. It is just impossible to recruit as a lame duck.
