And we really hope he doesn't imitate Pollack's NFL career.

First round signing bonus money is too bad!

The word on Mickey Johnson is he needs to get the drive that Bates has. If he does, he will be unblockable.

I saw the game last night and he was a one man wrecking crew - double and triple teamed - on one series he was in on 3 straight tackles and 2 were to the other side of the field with Bates running the back down from behind - Rummel had 61 yds total offense. That was the best effort I have ever seen from a high school defensive player - 110% all the time. We are lucky to have his commitment.

re: "I think it's unfair to expect him to be another Alem bc I don't ever see him getting that big."

Give or take about a half inch in height and Bates is already as big as Rahim Alem was as a Freshman. LSU's 2005 roster had Alem listed at 6'-3", 233#. For 2006 to 2009 he is listed at 252, 254, 254, and 263, respectively.

From what I can gather, Bates is between 6'-2" and 6'-3" and in the low to mid 230s. I'm sure Moffit can put a few pounds on him. T-Bob's listed at 285 and I think he was 255-260ish his Sr year.

FWIW, Alem was measured at 6'2" 236 lbs at a Rivals combine the spring of his Junior year. I am glad to hear that Bates has put on some muscle, as I know that he only weighed in at 218 lbs in the spring.

I'm not being critical of him. I just looked at his body type, and figured that around 245 lbs would be the max for him. I hope I'm wrong though bc I am a big fan of the kid. It wouldn't be the first time that I'm wrong.

Colts Fan, you're right. HB was 218# at the combine in N.O. (when he was voted MVP, ahead of Trovon Reed and others) At that time, I think he was focused on improving his speed and may have got lighter than he wanted.

245# isn't an unreasonable estimate of his max playing weight, but I think he will get bigger. I'm not saying he'll ever play at 275#, because he isn't THAT big. But I do think the training staff will be able to put some more meat on him, while not sacrificing his speed. He already works out like a fiend, so maybe he won't get much bigger, but I do expect him to get bigger over the next few years. 250 easy, and maybe 260ish. We'll see....

If he gets up that high, then he'll play in the NFL IMO.

Hopefully he never sacrificies his speed for size, bc that is his greatest attribute. Speed is more important than size for a football player anyway. In particular, explosiveness.

I was also at this game on Friday. I had never seen this kid before. I was impressed. Bates has a very high motor. He is intense and did not take any plays off - even on special teams. On top of that he is a team guy. He was including everyone on the roster in the game - talking to them, high fives, even the freshman. I have no idea how he will ultimately project at the D1 level, but he looks like a really good ballplayer.
