Here's another linebacker recruit for the current class...

Barrett Newman from Parkway in Bossier City.
6-2, 215 pounds, had 110 tackles for the season and 3 interceptions. All-Metro and the Parish defensive MVP, not that it means a whole lot.
Supposedly runs a 4.6 40. Also plays RB in high school.
Lots of minor offers. Hugh Freeze offered him at Liberty. He did visit here in November, but we haven't offered.
Here's his HUDL film. There's some speed in there, and he definitely likes to hit. Good bit of special teams work in there, including a blocked punt which we could use.
I doubt we do more than a preferred walkon spot with him, but on the other hand we could use a depth guy at linebacker, especially if he'll do special teams dirty work for us. This guy could fit that.

Looks like a player to me!

Good find. I agree, he would be an awesome add as a PWO and could contribute on kickoff and punt almost immediately

I like the Lb’ers that play rb. He is not 6’2 tho

Thanks for letting us know Mr Newman. We will forward this to the coaches

Go get him at this point we need LB’s

Looks great to me, but I'm no judge.

That's a 5-A classification, looks good.
Another to keep a eye on is Jadon Mayfield out of Ruston High. He made all State as a sophomore and a junior.

Lighten up, Francis. That’s been light hearted humor on this board since its creation. Some of y’all need to learn to laugh a little.

Yeah, I don't think so either.
But he's probably six feet, and that's tall enough.
I'm not sure he's a 4.6 40 either, but he can probably run a 4.75, and you can play LB in the SEC with that speed.
By the time our S&C program got done with this guy he could be 6-0 or 6-1 and 230 or so, and I bet he'd contribute in the kicking game and in the LB rotation even if he never actually starts much.
We just need a guy like that in this class, and then we need a Nick Jackson or Omar Speights to plug into the playing rotation. One is more about selection than recruiting; Barrett Newman (or a guy like him) would crawl on his knees to Baton Rouge if we offered.

I don’t think you can be a successful sec Lb in today’s football running a 4.75, really need to be 4.6 and below. The truly elite LB’s run in the 4.4’s nowadays

You serious Clark?
LB’s don’t run 40 yard dashes at RBs…it’s in a box and way more required than straight line speed.

4.4 guys are going to have more twitch than 4.7 guys, in the box, straight line, and any other way you want to think about it. If it didn’t matter so much then tell me why Patrick queen and Devin white are so successful as LB’s, speed is a huge part of it. Almost every good pro LB is fast. Look at west weeks and then look at Harold Perkins.. that’s the difference speed makes at LB

Correct. I’d say 5-10-5 is a better measure for linebackers than 40 but your point is still correct. Speed matters. The difference between a scrapping backer getting to the hole a step ahead of the ball carrier vs getting there at the same time is the difference in 4+ yards on every run play

Ali Highsmith ran a 4.9.
We've sent several LB's to the NFL who didn't run faster than 4.7.
And we're talking about recruiting a program player for depth, not the next Patrick Queen. Perspective, please.
