This is a completely false narrative. Have players always gotten paid some money? Yes.
But getting a car, or a couple grand from a local businessman is not the same as what is going on today.
Most legitimate businesses and fans would never give money to recruits in the past. Some would sure. But now that it's legal, the money has grown significantly. Publicly traded companies are involved.
So it hasn't "always been this"

And you'd be wrong.
They've had businesses (in the past) have players on payroll that never worked a single day (Summer).

That’s as close to an ncaa violation as you can get
Two separate university collectives in a bidding war
It's not a violation at all for separate collectives to make competing NIL offers to prospects. If that was a violation then the literal existence of collectives would itself be a violation.

No shite. I never said otherwise.
But most legitimate business would not participate in that. You would not have well known businessmen and alumni brag in public about the money they are paying players. You did not have publicly traded companies paying players.
Players have always been paid. It's the scale that has changed. Completely different animal.

I don’t see how a recruit doesn’t look at Livvy, Angel, Crews, Skenes, Van Lith and Flaujae and not think LSU is the place to go for NIL and athletic success.
