Does LSU need to recruit a place kicker in 2022?

Avery Atkins is a senior in 2021 and Cade York is a junior.

I think you answered your own question

I thought York was a sophomore this season

ETA: saw the 2021 in there. I guess it wouldn’t hurt, 2022 is a long way and he will probably have 3 more solid years left.

The key is do you try to replace Avery Atkins as kick off and have a year of overlap with Cade York. If you want to rely on a freshman again, you could wait until 2023.
But I am a little afraid of relying upon freshman kickers (in spite of last year).

Actually, when you watch game highlights of last year, York was pretty inconsistent.

Isn’t one of the best kickers in the country walking on this year?

21-27 on FGs, PERFECT from inside 40 yards. 4-5 from 50+
As a FRESHMAN. You're clueless.

Kudos great Link
Here’s his 247 link with his commitment tweet to LSU
Mata Committed
His Value is versatility— Great punter as well
Great Story — Academic Scholly for Mata
Mata has made a 67-yard field goal in practice, and his in-game best is 53 yards

The staff probably just completely forgot that they need a kicker...

Would rather not have to rely on a freshman again. Looking back those two kicks in Tuscaloosa were damn special.
York should be able to kick off though no?

Are you f’in kidding me? That TRUE freshman was clutch. Does Texas or Bama ring a bell? His numbers were great.

There’s a reason he’s walking on, he might be serviceable but who knows? The last walk on kicker to get significant action was Gonsoulin and he struggled.

Get that and the really elite ones get offered but kickers are very commonly walkons. And also a crapshoot for the most part even at the pro level. Never truly know what you're getting. Look at Bama. We'd all agree that staff is elite at evaluation and get big time kickers but they struggle. We've been very fortunate for the most part. Great shape currently.

If anyone is wondering how Coach Mac found him. John Carney is one his coaches.
