So why is this situation so "wrong" when what Miles did to Benton was OK - since he did what was best for LSU? Personally, I see no difference in the two situations (except that Jackson probably knew he was going to screw over the other longer than Miles knew he was going to screw Benton).

Because it's a parent and head coach instilling the value that it's cool to lie to everyone around you as long as it benefits you.

I don't know the whole story to the Benton deal, but the kid already had two strikes. It wasn't a tough decision:

A) Continue holding a scholly for a kid who may never get on the field, and even if he does may bolt after one or two years.

or

B)Give a scholly to the best WR in the nation who is qualified and will be here at least 3.

If Benton couldn't get his high school grades in order to get in, why would he keep them up to stay on the team? Everone is pissed b/c Les pulled the scholly and that's wrong b/c the kid "told Les he was committed to LSU". Well, he's said that for three years now. Show me your grades, get cleared, then we'll talk.

I did not hear or read the whole interview but only read what some of you posted. It's obvious that Coach Guidry isn't too intelligent for criticizing Ron Cooper. He's probably mouthing off some of Coach O's words. Now, I know why they are so good friends. Their IQ's are compatible.

Miles told the truth when his AD thought it was in his best interest to have no comment.

All of the grades and "two strikes" stuff became an issue after and only after Randle's dad said Rueben was going elsewhere if Benton signed with LSU. He was a Tiger until it appeared Rueben wouldn't be if Benton was. Miles then pulled the rug out from under him similarly as to Jackson pooping on LSU. You know it and the whole world knows it.

that's exactly the point. if he qualifies and makes it here, great! what do you have to lose? but when another player who is higher on your board says 'it's him or me', then you have a lot to lose. randle was the better, safer pick.

Negative...

Benton isn't interested in staying in school, that is the problem with this entire ordeal

And that the hang up with me. Maybe it's my arrogance or not liking to get backed into a corner but it's right there where Miles should have said "hey, I made a commitment to another kid too. If you are afraid of the competition then get your arse to Alabama or Oklahoma or where ever. We don't need this. But if you want to win a championship, come to LSU and we will all do it together". Miles blinked - and sold a kid down the river. You know and the whole world knows it.

Lets be real...Miles made a choice.

In Benton he had a very talented kid who struggled to get eligible. Much of the rumors surrounding this lean toward is eligibility issues being caused by the kid being lazy in his schoolwork. I have been told by a friend that his coaches and the people helping him get his stuff together were having to wake his butt up every morning to do his work. He was also by some accounts very vocal about his intention to establish himself quickly and then head to the NFL. This isn't to say he is a bad kid...he wouldn't be the first like this and he won't be the last. But it is what Miles was looking at.

In Randle he has a talented and eligible kid who wants to be there and will be ther for certain for 3 years.

It became apparent late that he wasn't getting both of them. He had to make a choice so he made it...the right one. Not only that but he owned the choice and didn't lie about it or shy away from it.

Is it clean and neat...nope. However faced with the same situation my bet is almost all of us would have made the same choice.

I know you're flaming, but that isn't the story that's emerging at all.

Yeah you're an idiot. Benton wanted to go to Auburn at the last minute and Randle's father made that excuse on air to give him(benton) an out.

and your an idiot if you believe that bullshite. randels dad helped benton by going on the radio saying his son wasnt going to lsu if benton goes.all to ease the tension on benton but throw his kid under the bus. look miles made a tuff decision annd imo took the better player. as far asjj goes he and his dad handled it wrong but made a choice that they thought was best for them.the real a-hole here is kiffin and the way he handled the situation. but people dont have to make up a story about benton and randles dad to make miles not look like the bad guy. we all know miles is a class act and kiffins a piece of shite.

Benton and Randle is a little bit like Colt McCoy/Chase Daniels and Perrilloux(but with academics). We could have gotten either if Perrilloux hadn't pick LSU.

Looking back on it, who got the better deal, LSU or UT/Mo. Same situation but about academics. None of these players were going to go to the same school.

Miles learned that Character and Educational Ability trumps the alternative. Miles wasn't going to lose the chance to have someone here for 3 years over someone who might only be here for 1.

Sounds more like someone had a foray into the crackhouse about 18 years ago. Maybe he does know.

Stop saying this you douchebag...if Benton wanted to be at LSU so bad, he wouldn't have gone off on a visit to Auburn to test the waters. LSU waited for two years for this guy to get qualified, then Benton says he is only going to play for one year then go pro...it wasn't a hard decision for Miles once Reuben's dad said what he did.

Miles didn't sell anyone down the river- It was quite apparent that Benton had no intention of staying in school, he was going to play for a year & then apply for NFL draft. I would love to see his grades by the middle of his second semester...

And that's all I am saying. Miles' word to Benton meant nothing once Randle's dad gave the ultimatum. Did he take the player with the more upside potential? I would have to imagine so. My point is if some 18 year old kid is going to give me an ultimatum that is going to cause me to go back on my word to another? Sorry, I am telling him to hit the road. Probably why I won't ever make $4M running an elite football program but that's just the way I see it.
