Chase Stanley, U-High article

So today the Advocate LINK had a piece on this U-High kid I've seen play a few times and was always pretty impressed. I saw on another thread LINKthat TJ (or anybody else on the LSU staff for that matter) hasn't really taken the time to walk a block or so to check him out.
The last time I saw him was against Episcopal and their man-child star, Brian Bridgewater. They might as well have cleared the court and let these 2 kids do a 1-1. Although Episcopal won the game, I thought Stanley won the battle.

Hopefully this will get the coach's to at least take some notice, it certainly seems like they could use a true PG and somebody that can shoot the ball.
You would think that U-High would be a clear channel to LSU, wouldn't you?

I've never seen the kid play so I will not give an opinion of his talents. However, just as scoring a bunch of points in college doesn't make you an NBA player, scoring a bunch of points in high school doesn't make you a college player.
Before you criticize LSU for not recruiting him, tell us who is recruiting him.

I've seen the kid play. He can score at the next level. He's a G. He drops 30 like it's his hobby. He is a better perimeter shooter than anyone lsu has right now. And it isn't close.
He almost broke the all-time state record for consecutive FTs as well.
If you put up 30 in a game a few times then I would say you might be a player, because some high school teams are just bad.
But when you are dropping 40 on people and scoring 30 20 different times, you can fill it up.
I have heard the kid has been approached by GT, Clemson, and a few SEC schools.

I've heard he has interest from Clemson, UNLV, Tulane, UL...granted, like the article states, he's really only exploded onto the scene this year so I can see how he wouldn't be on the radar for a lot of schools, but when you play at the lab school...
Anyway, I have my own theory. I hear he's been hooked up with Colis Temple the elder (who has obvious connections to U High) and from everything I've heard he and TJ aren't on the best terms.

never seen the kid play. don't know anything about him.
with that said, it really doesn't matter how many points he or any player for that matter is scoring in high school. L.S.U. needs a p.g. who is 6 foot or taller that can defend, can break down a defense through penetration, and do well with assist to turnover ratio. If he can score, that's an added bonus.
believe it or not, lsu has some very good shooters on this team. the two issues are no post presence and no one who can penetrate.
if you had these two elements, it would open up the shooters.

If Stanley is really good, he needs to get his PR and promotions machine working. I just searched for him on youtube and got nothing. I searched for articles on him and this thread came up, along with the Advocate article this thread references.
He is also not in any recruiting databases.

Yeah, I think that might be b/c he's a "late bloomer" and wasn't in the camps over the summer and what not, but you're right, somebody needs to get that hype machine going.

I have not seen the kid play in high school, but did see him play in middle school a bunch. He was very short for his age at the time, and did not hit a growth spurt until late. Even in the 8th grade he could light it up from the outside like few I have seen.
He didn't play much for the freshman team at CHS, so he transferred to U High and is a stud there.
I would think that judging white guards (that arent true point guards) in high school has to be very tough. How can you really tell the difference between a Gerry Mcnamara, Teddy Dupay, Lee Humphrey, Bobby Frasor that play at a Syracuse, Florida, UNC, etc... from a Luke Zumo, Chase Stanley, Charlie Thompson, etc...that end up at a Loyola or Centenary type school. They can all light it up from the outside.
I know guys like Hinrich, Reddick, Brent Nelson were all in the 6'4 range, but the other big time white shooting guards I mentioned were in the 5'10 to 6'2 range.

I think that is most likely the biggest thing holding him down, not having a lot of PR and also the stereotype that he's just another little white player.
I do see that he made the State All Star Game, so somebody must be noticing how dominant he's been this year.
I also agree that LSU needs somebody that can score and distribute the ball, but from what I've seen the majority of his points come from inside the lane, which is precisely what LSU needs; somebody that can get into the lane and score, shoot free throws well, and knock down a lot of three's.
Obviously I don't know a lot about recruiting but I think the original point for the poster was that its illogical for some kid who is going off and could conceivably be leading the state in scoring can't get a look from the coaches at his feeder school who are in the midst of their worst offensive season in history.

You don't know that he hasn't gotten a look. Perhaps LSU has determined he is not good enough.

Very true...I mean, I suppose it's possible that there has been some type of contact w/ him but I'd think he's worthy of an invitation to walk-on and maybe a scholly if something works out...

That's a very valid point which I can't really dispute, but it just would seem that they would have had some contact with him, which from my limited understanding they haven't.

True but at what point do we start questioning TJ's ability to evaluate talent? This of course is going beyond this issue...
Posted on 2/17/11 at 3:03 pm to Joshuag
Well, considering that we have no proof that ANY school is recruiting this kid, much less LSU, I don't think that's relevant at this point.
Posted on 2/17/11 at 3:19 pm to Bubba Hotep
Well like I said, I was going beyond the topic of this thread but yeah, I hear you...time will tell. Wouldn't want a Jimmer to slip right from underneath you...

Jimmer
That's quite a reach there. You're comparing the likely national player of the year to Chase Stanley? Although Jimmer did fail to get some major Big East-level offers, he was a 3-star player with many D1 offers. This Stanley kid is so far under the radar that he is subterranean.
Posted on 2/17/11 at 4:41 pm to Bubba Hotep
Seen him play a few times he isn't D1 material

Idk who you were watching but he's pretty damn good. He easily scores 30 without much help. He single handedly put Uhigh in the playoffs this year. Last I talked to him about it Tulane looks good.
