Hate to break it to you, but recruiting has always been pay for play.

Is anything he said actually wrong though?
Recruiting is not dead. It may have changed some, but it's not close to dead.
Money has always been a part of recruiting. Even going back to 1908 when LSU was accused of paying players.
Moreover, it's silly to suggest that money is everything. It's not. Many players make school choices in which money is not the bottom line.
I'm not naive enough to suggest that money is never the bottom line, but those instances in which money plays a larger role in the decision-making process get bigger headlines because those instances usually involve higher profile athletes, later in the recruiting process when there is more attention, and the amount of money is greater.
And to be honest, the very fact that money is involved has not been completely accepted. Too many people diminish the decision-making process that athletes and parents undergo and would rather reduce the entire process to greed. Those people can't/won't identify with the athletes and parents, have never been involved with athletes/parents who make those kinds of decisions, and have preexisting notions of how that calculus is made.
There are entire industries that are based on recruiting outside of sports. There are salespeople who thrive on conducting business without emphasis on price. In nearly every industry involving sales and commerce, relationships matter.
Ole Miss is not hiring Frank Wilson just to get back at LSU. Frank Wilson has real value as a recruiter. Why? Because recruiting matters.
LSU has a large NIL budget, and it's even larger now that Lane is the head coach. Everyone wants to be associated with a winner, including people with deep pockets.
Nevertheless, LSU will not be able to outspend every other school for every recruit that Lane covets. LSU is going to need to attract and sign players without being the top spender on each player.
Recruiting matters. Recruiting is not dead. Recruiting has not come to an end.
Not even close.

So you think it wasn't always pay for play? It is just legal now.
