Malcolm is who Bama would go after if they started to lose out or lost out on Brian Thomas as I understand it.

Fair enough, but the way I see it is that due to the way Brian Thomas's recruitment is going they are going to try and get Malcolm and not be left empty handed.

We have 3 elite WRs committed, we’re not going to be left empty handed.
Johnson Jr. and Thomas Jr. have both been priority targets for Bama this cycle.

He is and was the backup plan for Thomas and/or the slot from FL. Does that mean they will stop recruiting Thomas if Johnson commits, of course not. That's just the way recruiting goes. Never stop because kids verbal. Also explains why both were/ are "priorities".
Also doesn't mean you're incorrect that Bama would take both because I'm sure they would but it wasn't the plan. But we all know Sabans board changes constantly. I'm sure there's a 5th guy we'd take at wr but it isn't the plan.
