Penciling him in at DE is just speculation right now.

We don't know where the staff sees him but it seems to me they see him at linebacker because they're considering taking 2 more DEs in this class.

6'6 isn't unheard of for linebackers..and Mingo has so much athleticism it's hard to say that he wouldn't be able to play it even after he bulks up.

He very well could grow into a DE though. He has the frame to grow into one to be sure..I just see so much upside I don't think it matters what scheme he plays in.

LSU doesn't like speed rushers. He'll either sit the bench or put on too much bulk and lose his speed.

Plus, what you guys are talking about keeps him on the bench a couple years.

His best future position is 34 OLB.
Hes already a little tall for a linebacker, and he could grow taller. He'll end up at DE in college.

He's got the perfect build for a 34 OLB.

FWIW you see a lot of NFL teams take guys who were DEs in college and make them rush-backers in the 3-4..DeMarcus Ware was a defensive end at Troy.

Why can't LSU's front-4 rush the passer to save their life? Alem is a borderline speed rusher, and LSU's only player of that sort.

He does have a good point.

Pittman was talked about being the speed rush guy at one point but never really turned into one..Alem brings good speed to the position.

Tremaine Johnson and Pep Levingston seem like good edge rushers but they never really play.

Which would lead me to believe that Mingo is EXACTLY what they're looking for now. If they could get pressure from a speed rusher at the DE spot, they wouldn't need to blitz.

he was a speed rusher in 2003 as a true freshman

then he put on 20-30 lbs and isn't one now

don't worry i'm sure pep has already bulked up too much to be a speed rusher

Mingo does look extremely fast on film. Anyone know his 40 time?

So that means that LSU doesn't like speed rushers? That's what I was laughing at.

I think everyone knows that LSU needs more speed on the edge....including LSU. That's why you recruit a guy like Mingo to help with that. He is a unique blend of size and speed. How many 6'5" guys do you know that can run a 48 second quarter mile.
I don't argue that Mingo could play in a 3-4, but to say he doesn't fit LSU's scheme is just plain ridiculous. Especially when your arguement is that LSU "doesn't like speed rush guys".

Rahim Alem?

He's even faster in the 100 than the 40. Takes a while for those long legs to get going. It was like another gear on the play I mentioned earlier.

Kirston Pittman? Not a speed rusher anymore, especially this season.

Rahim Alem? The closest thing LSU has to a speed rusher, and he doesn't get to play enough.
