From Kohl's Kicking:

Tyson Shaw

What's weird is he graded out better as a punter at the camp, but was only the kickoff guy at his high school if the stats on that page are correct

I watched first 2 minutes of highlight film

didnt show much besides chip shots and FG inside of 45 yards

looked accurate, but of course he would in a tape of highlights

seemed to lack a lot of follow through

not much to grade him on, imho

Gawd bless you. I am not being sarcastic.

I have never gotten anything out of watching "skilled position" players' highlights (I just am unable to learn all that much). I cannot even imagine watching a KICKER's highlights.

If he's a kickoff guy it could mean the end of the road for Culp. Pure speculation on my part though.

I posted in the other thread and I'll do it here. I don't think he confirmed that he is enrolling at LSU, hell he tweeted the same exact language when WCU offered him in December.

Yes, actually.

This is a SMART offer. Get the idea of Tyson as a kicker out of your head. This is a pure PUNTER offer. Tyson is workable as a kicker if need, but he is nothing special there insofar as college skills go. For example, his Kickoffs land just short of or right at the goal line with only average hang time. I am pretty sure when we were in Wisconsin he did not even compete against other kickers in the FG competition.

HOWEVER....as a PUNTER???? Dude has a great "A" ball. I saw numerous 50+ yard net punts with hang times in the 4.7 range. He is only about 6"...maybe 5'11". Usually, big ball hitters are taller and have a longer range of motion on their kick. Now, while I am high on him, I will also say I saw several mishits.....including a few balls in the mid 30s. I

I remain real high on him because when a kicker has such a good "A" ball in high school, more times than not they can and do improve on it at the college level.
( Yes, I am aware our current two kickers are the exception to this statement) I think he can eliminate the mis-hits and call on that "A" ball more frequently.

He is a little bit of a steal because a lot of schools are overlooking him. He has handled some kicking duties in HS (Lowndes High, Valdosta GA) mainly kickoffs. I think they have someone else handling PAT and FG.

While it is not a popular thought, I do not like recruiting specialists using PWO offers. these are important positions and if the kid is important enough to recruit and can potentially change your game....he is important enough for a school offer. My guess is Tyson comes in as a PWO and picks up a scholarship following his first year of active duty.

I had to laugh at this. I suppose everyone has the position they are more experienced with....I just happen to love kicking. I love coaching it, love watching it, analyzing film and mechanics, and back in my younger days....loved doing it.

No. Hasn't got the leg to be a regular kick-off guy. His senior season he only averaged about 60 yards on kickoffs. Perhaps I should not say he "hasn't got the leg". Technically, that is not correct. He can occasionally launch a long ball 70 yds....but tends to be inconsistent. For example, in Wisconsin he charted an average of 65 yds....that drops it right on the goal line in college. Anything inside of 70 yards ( 5 yards deep) runs a risk of being returned.

This is a PUNTING offer.

Damn Barrister, that is some great scouting. As a former punter myself I appreciate the detail you it into describing mechanics.

Has anyone been able to confirm he accepted LSUs offer or was he just tweeting that he got an offer?

I read somewhere he has like 80 out of 100 or so kickoffs for touchbacks, can’t look up the exact numbers, sorry, but it was around there... I’ll take that in a heartbeat!

Dandy Don corrected his report. Tyson hasn't accepted it. He's "very interested."

Correction: Confirmed that Shaw was offered PWO and is very interested in playing for LSU but has not yet committed.
