quote:I think that that is a key area that has been overlooked so far. From the beginning the assumption was that good talent would just quickly enter the Portal every year, so a coach had to recruit top portal and HS classes every year to be successful. But if a coach can recruit as well as RETAIN players then you can use the portal to just add key pieces as opposed to whole roster remakes as Musselman tried to do at Arkansas.
I agree.
And I hope I'm not speaking too early, but give McMahon credit. He's retained most of his players with remaining eligibility. The only two that have left, Wilkinson and Cook were not unexpected. In a world where even all conference multi-year starters at major conf. schools enter the portal McMahon has (thus far) been able to avoid that.
Assuming that remains the case, this team is going to have more continuity than either of his first two teams. Currently 7 guys from this season's roster are set to return. In today's college basketball that is an anomaly.
I would go so far as to say that player retention is a pretty good advantage for a college program nowadays. So far (knock on wood) the only players we didn't want to lose that left were Phillips and Mwani. Phillips was likely recruited by Adam Miller while he was still on campus. Mwani, while I didn't want him to leave, has fulfilled his commitment to LSU over 4 years, 2 coaches, and overcoming injuries. I wish him luck.
