If a football recruit can qualify for a pell grant or is multi millionaire or academic scholarship. Explain why a school can't sign more than 25. Over half should have 1 of the above opportunities . Baseball has to get creative with this

To prevent hoarding talent.

Anyone can pay their own way or get a TOPS scholarship or whatever scholarship and walk on and not count against the 25. The 25 limit is for players you sign to athletic scholarships.

Do you even Bear Bryant, bro? He would have 150 players dress for games. You don’t want to go down that road again, it’s a lesson already learned.

You're describing a Blue shirt and there's more to it than that. Said player cannot take official visit to school and coaches can't visit them. Not certain if on an unofficial the coaches can see the player.

Example. If your top 5 recruits qualified for a pell grant, let the kid use that money and get 5 more kids on scholarship. Now you technically have 30 very talented kids vs 25 talented kids and 5 wealthy kids who barely see scout team action

The NCAA setup rules to discourage this. They came up with Blueshirting. Once a kid is visited by the school or visits the school, he will count against the 25 man scholarship if he enrolls in said school and does ANY football activity.
If said student enrolls but doesn't practice, workout, etc. He would then be a grey shirt. But you lose his initial year of learning, playing, etc.

Players do this all the time. It is called walk-on. They do not have to sign LOI and you have no hooks into them.

Players who come from economically depressed backgrounds get Pell Grants in addition to their athletic scholarship anyway. That money plus the Cost of Attendance allowance is how they can afford to go out on dates, buy gas, or occasionally order a pizza etc.
Additionally, if you have a top player you tell he has to pay his own way and school B is telling him he gets a free ride which do you think he’d be inclined to sign with?

Don’t think these guys have to worry about occasionally ordering pizzas. Let’s be for real here. They are driving nicer rides than us on this board.

You can’t be a “recruited” athlete. There are rules.
But for true walkons, this absolutely can and is done.

The NCAA allows baseball to split scholarships. They don’t do the same for football

Speaking of 25, how is a school allowed sign 100 players over 4 years but the roster limit is 85?
I know there is annual bankable attrition that practically ensures this is not a problem, but you know there will one day be a team with 75 eligible returning players and in theory can only add a new class of 10.

If they qualified for a grant and took it they could be on the team. They are only allowed to sign a certain number to scholarships designated for football.
