Yard Drainage/French Drain

I've got a back patio area that drains and holds water that I want to flow out to the road quicker. Also need to divert water from the front of the house. Think I'll just add gutters here but gutters on the back patio isn't an option. What's some good drainage options you guys have done that won't cost an arm and a leg?

I had a standing water issue and decided to do a french drain. Dig a trench, add perforated pipe wrapped in a filter sock and then covered with gravel and top soil. Mine drains into the woods on my property and works great. You could do it cheaply if you hand dig, but renting a mini ex or trencher would be worth the money.

How far did you run it? What did it cost you in materials?

I’m about to do one 170’. Figure with 5 catch basins and a few 45° Connectors and a couple Ts will run me about $600

Ran it about 130 ft or so. I can't remember the cost exactly...around $600-700 and I believe that included the mini ex rental.

French drain would be the easiest. I just ran about 320 LF of pipe in my yard. About half of the was perforated pipe, wrapped in gravel and geo tech fabric. Tied in all my downspouts too
Rented a dingo with a bucket and trencher attachment. 2 surface drains, plus pop up emitter.
All in with rental was a little under $1500. Cheapest quote I got was 6K.

Might be a stupid question but with a major reno coming I know I will have to redo my backyard to street drainage. What is the best way when DIY'ing to know your elevations and keep your drainage at a slight decline for proper flow from the catch basins to the street?

Do those things work as advertised? I have 2 catch basins that ALWAYS get clogged up with grass clippings from my neighbor so I have to go out there with mud boots to remove the grate so it'll flow properly. Such a PITA>

Does anyone have any contacts for someone who owns and knows how to use a mini excavator in the Walker, LA area? I am about to start working on a french drain project in my yard and I want someone on the machine who knows how to slope grade properly. TIA.

From what I can tell, you need a minimum 1% to 2% slope. You can always run a string line to grade (1 to 2 inches of drop every 10 ft.) and fill your base up to the string. Drop the pipe on top, and fill.

You can certainly get fancy, but my preferred method:
-Dig the”pilot trench” without worrying about slope to act as your guide.
-Then, use a 4-6ft piece of solid pipe, along with a 4ft level, to verify slope 4-6ft at a time.
-If you have areas needing minor soil removal, I like to use a 1ft piece of solid pipe cut at an angle as a digging tool, also creates a smooth base for pipe.
