Working on a family members patio. What should I do with the border of the yard?

Patio

The patio is 30+ years old and I’m helping clean it up for them. Exposed an additional 4-5ft of pavers that had been covered by turf 2 inches deep (damn it was hot) ??

Looking for something to do with the margin of the pavers and the grass. I was thinking of laying down some river rocks or bricks but not sure. They don’t have an opinion and will go with what I decide on. Any ideas?

Be careful if they're old, that shits a trip hazard for slightly intoxicated 40 year olds and may kill an old person.

The old rusted original metal is there and I may dig it up. Looking for something more decorative though.

Absolutely. Thought I’d put some brick but even it out.

If the existing turf is higher, that spot will hold water. A good metal boarder and a French drain to get the water out of there is the ticket.

Can’t tell if those gutter downspouts go into the ground or not. Doesn’t look like they do, and if not, that’s definitely contributing to your water retention and soil/grass encroachment into the area. If it were me, I’d have those downspouts drain into some buried PVC or corrugated drainage pipe, which drains to a more convenient location, possibly with the use of popups.

Can you elaborate further on where I should extend the gutter drains? You are right in that they were emptying right onto the lawn and flooding the area. I added flexible extenders to divert the water some but it’s not good enough I know. If I were to extend them underground, how far are we talking and what do you mean by a pop-up?

I agree with what Poochie said. Something that drains good. Looks like water is going to hold there.
Also….. good job. Looks a ton better.

If the center drain is working (actually draining water from the patio) tie the downspout into it and convert the underground drain from the downspout into a french drain, as well.

Oh good idea! May try that.

I’m a similar point, any good ideas on tracing the drain? The main pipe connected to the drain leaves strait into the yard, perpendicular to the patio. After that I don’t know a good way to trace it other than digging..

There’s no obvious drain exit that I’ve been able to find yet. Little chance I’ll find it given how old the drain probably is but willing to try.

Put garden hose in drain. Turn on water & look for where the water comes out
