This weekend I’m planning to build a wooden shelf for my garage. I’ve never built a shelf before but the plans using triangle bracing seems simple enough. I intend to do 12 inch braces (12 inches out from wall and 12 inches vertical). If my shelf will be 18 inches wide, is 12 inches of bracing enough or do I need to make it bigger? I’m using 1 by’s for the shelf.

Not sure how fancy you’re trying to get, but below is how I did mine. All the same but used 1x’s for the shelf boards. Screw the back supports into the existing wall studs. I’ve got a ton of stuff on mine and it’s sturdy as it gets.

Thanks for the reply. I’m doing floating shelves due to having some items stored lower that would get in the way of the supports. Your design would be easier but I need the floor space.

The brace doesn't have to go the full width of the shelf, but the more overhang you have, the more you risk the shelf tipping off the end of the brace if you put too much weight on the edge (think sliding a heavy box off of it). Make sure the shelf is secured well to the top of the brace. I'd probably go at least 3/4 the width of the shelf, which would be 13-14" in this case.

I ended up going with the closetmaid wire shelfs for my garage. Easy to hang, clean, etc. I have a couple heavy duty racks that I use for heavier items.

Thanks. 3/4 the width is a good guide.

I used something similar to this before at an old house. This one has 3 holes in the top you can bolt your boards to and they'll be strong and sturdy. Just mount it in studs and you're good to go.

Just built some. Copied another shelf the house builder installed. It has a board on top of the brace that went out the distance ofc the shelf board.

See pics. They are very sturdy.

I wish I had a pic to share, but in my old house I built 24’ of shelving using one 3/4” sheet of the high end plywood you can find at Lowe’s. I basically put it on a table saw and made 4 8’x1’ strips. I used three of the strips as shelving and cut up the fourth strip to use as my supports. I used a jig-saw to make an S styled cut then routed the edges to make it look nice. Also made a 3”x12” plate that I mounted each support to then screwed those supports to the wall studs.

You could do the same style shelves to make 16’ of shelving if you cut a sheet into 3 strips. Two 17” strips for shelving and one 14” strip for the supports.
