I need to build some sort of walkway from house to garden area. Presently, the grass is getting beat down where we walk across.
Assuming I can access a load of free wood chips and pack them down with my lawn tractor is this a viable option? A good thick layer should work, right?

Sounds like a real PIA. Just use rocks. Wood chips are going to break down and need to be added regularly, will prob scatter into grass easily from wind, rain, walking on it.

top dress with more?
I realize it will need future attention. That's ok because it turns into killer soil.
Rocks cost too much when free ground up wood chips can be delivered by a tree service.

yes just keep adding to the top as it breaks down. And yes it improves the soil

I get 30 yard dumps every year or so from the sawmill

Use railroad crossties as borders. Use pre-ermgent on the path same as you would your lawn or weeds will grow in it. I miss the days when all the parks used mulch on trails to prevent erosion and make the path softer under foot, before they decided to pave every nature trail in North America for the Oweo's of the world.
