I've read this thread and have a question.

My wife has employees that whip out their iphone and watch the cameras at their houses. What type of "system" or service do they have? Is it one of the ones mentioned in this thread or something totally different?. She says they pay a monthly fee. That's all I know.

Most all of the home cam systems can do this today as long as they have an internet connection.

Ok, she thinks it's something like the "Blink" cameras.

I’ve posted this on tech board recently but NVR and cameras are different things.
Best cameras are Hikvision and Dahua. Basically all other cameras are just rebrands of these two with custom software than may hinder their abilities or compatibility with various systems.
My fav NVR is by FAR Frigate software run on a PC set up as a server(auto restart and what not). It’s completely free, I can run 5x 1080p with yolo-nas medium AI detection on an older 8th gen 655 igpu and no npu. I get alarms within about one second as push notifications exactly when I want them and never when irrelevant. Alarms also include a snapshot and link to video within the notification. Right now that is when I am away or sleeping and people(not animals) are detected only on my property(not neighbors or sidewalk). I also have an alarm for when a dog(not person) walks on a specific carpet inside but that is temporary. I can record everything for 24 hours and then events(all object detections) for several weeks or months without much storage.
ETA I’m prob too excited as I just got this up and going in the last two weeks and previously used the cheapest NVR possible but it is super powerful. Also this market is improving rapidly making computer software an even better choice. I’ll probably end up custom training my yolo model and doing secondary object classification like faces and plates within a couple months if I get bored.

How is the wiring done? In wall?
Some systems come with 60 ft Ethernet cables, that are definitely not for in wall use. Our house is pretty big, 60 ft wouldn't be nearly enough.

Depending on your layout, the cables would mostly run in your attic to an eave and other end would go down a wall to wherever your NVR is. Because it's low voltage, the supplied cables should be fine for in wall

Any Cat 6 or 5e Ethernet cables will work . If you need longer than 60 ft, either buy premade cables to the length you need or make your own to length. Cat 6 is good up to ~300'

Terminating the ends is a pita but you get used to it after a while

10-4. I have leftovers from a 500' box of 5e I used during the build. You're right, the terminations are PITA, especially now with terrible in close eyesight.

I really think blue iris has the best interface and most compatibility along with being very configurable. I have it running off of a couple hundred dollar pc I bought off of ebay. It’s not gonna be plug and play like the others but it’s a great system.

99% of them are using ring cameras i bet and yep, monthly fee.

reolink includes a local NVR (network video recorder) which is a fancy term for a big-arse hard drive with ethernet ports you plug into your router so there's no fee, ever. you plug it in, plug in a camera and you're watching video. simple simple simple.

i hate subscription models so it felt good to dump that $10/mo ring fee.
