What is the proper name of the grass that grows in the yard that makes pickers?

Lawn burweed, spurweed, stickers, or piquants -- the list goes on and on with names that most people call this lawn pest that will poke or stick uncovered feet later this spring. The weed most folks are talking about is called lawn burweed and also called stickerweed.

What is the best way to kill this plant on a large scale? 2.5 acres. I have tried to control it in Jan/Feb but I still get it in much of my yard. Would love to kill it all but don't want to spend a small fortune.
