Water leak at meter

Should I call city or plumber?

If the leak is on your side (on your property) it's on you.. If it's on the street side it's on the city.. I had one and it was on the city.. But they ended up moving the meter on my property.. I didn't bitch because the city took on about 5 more feet of responsibility..

Have the city come out first and let them make the call. Had one coming from meter to my side but they took care of it anyway.

This.
A quick way to check the location of the leak is to make sure no water is running inside your house. If the meter is moving, the leak is on your side and your responsibility to repair.

Probably because nobody actually reads the meter. I had to turn mine off a few months ago for some repairs and I had to scoop a shovel full of mud off the top of it.

I had this a couple years back. Was on my side. I used a water hose with jet sprayer to remove soil around leaking meter connection. Sucked water out with shop vac. Cut pvc back and replace with new section and connection fitting. Saved me a couple hundred bucks.

They should have 2 dials on the meter. One is very sensitive (for lack of better term) and will detect slight leaks. There should be a shutoff valve to the house very close to the meter. Close that off and see if the dial is still slowly turning. If it is, then the leak is not on your side.
LUS is pretty good about sending out notices about constant use.
I had a cracked 90 on the PVC going to the house, just dug it up and fixed myself, also had a leaking seal on a toilet once that they notified me about.

He's in Lafayette, they have some kind of transmitter on the meters that city receives signals from. I don't think anyone ever has to come out to read the meters.

I didn't even know about the dial that reads for small leaks, so I had LUS come out the first time. I think they charged $25 or something like that. But it was worth the insight they gave.
