Drain valve was leaking, so I capped it off, per a plumbers advice. Now the catch pan at the bottom has filled with water. Any idea what’s going on?

Should drain to outside of your house. Usually two lines together The other is the pressure relief valve line.
Clear the plug in the pan drain line.

After capping the drain valve the pan still filled with water? Or is it still leaking from the valve?
Sounds like you have a leak the water heater. Identify the leak and patch it while planning to replace it.

The pan never filled until I capped the drain valve. The pan does not have a drain to outside. I’m finding more and more ways the people I bought from cut corners.

Is it leaking from the bottom?
You need to find the leak.

I had the same situation, ended up being a packing leak on the drain valve.
Isolated inlet valve, drained tank, replaced leaking valve, re-filled tank, re-lite heater…all good.

How old is the water heater?
You might try to hook a hose to the valve, open it wide, close it.

quote:if it's over 10 years old, you need a new water heater bc the bottom has rusted out. if the pan is just full, either drain it to outside or let it evaporate.

Is it gas or electric water heater?
Check all fittings on the top..
Check all valves on the side.
Check the areas where the heating elements screw in if electric.
If it is not one of these locations, the tank is rusted through and needs replacing.
I’ll bet the valve that you capped off was not leaking thorough the valve but instead leaking around the threads where the valve is screwed in.
