maybe I didn’t explain it clearly but that’s exactly what I want to do. Using mdf instead of lumber

IMO, shiplap isnt supposed to be perfect, so as long as the waves/imperfections arent "patterned" I say go for it.

not sure what people are melting about. I used 5/8 7" mdf shiplap on a 30x16 den and it worked well. did not have to fight real wood with the crowning bowing and twisting. I will say that nail holes are especially hard to hide in mdf so when the light hits them, they will show unless great pains are taken. Would not want fastening spans to be greater than 16oc and in my case was 12" because it was strapped out for the original ceiling.

excellent thank you that’s what I needed to know. And I’m not sure what all the commotion is about either, maybe I wasn’t clear in my post

Do you live in a church steeple? 10 on 12 32 ft above your vantage point and you can see popcorn? I thought you were just going to be in your outdoor all sex patio.

Please do. I'm trying to imagine three bucks of scaffold getting to 32 ft. A 5x7 with the get you to 6 ft to more bucks get you up to 16 ft. You're almost halfway there if you're ceiling be is at 32 ft. That's like two and a half stories of a commercial building inside your home. Please send some pics

Looking good.

I was not understanding that you were looking to do a shiplap pattern on the ceiling.

so I’m wanting to cover my popcorn ceilings instead of trying to get it off. Ceiling peak is 32’ and it’s a 10/12 pitch…too big of a hassle.

any thoughts on using mdf 1/4s to cover it? I was thinking the pre-primed stuff would be easier on the painter and I’d be assured the boards would be straight and flush.

once you get up about 16’ or so you can’t really see up there anyway without the upstairs lights on. Any obvious downsides?

They won't be straight and flush long. Without either a T&G or at least a rabbet joint (typical ship lap) or a biscuit / tenon to hold the edges 1x4s face nailed every 16 inches is going to droop, twist and otherwise move. Glueing will help but not on popcorn ceilings.

In my neck of the woods you can find T&G SYP 1X material, kiln dried, for around a dollar fifty a board foot (flooring). It can be stained or painted on the ground. At times you can get air dried T&G SYP for around $1.20 a BF. By comparison 1x4 primed MDF at HD is currently around $5 a BF and it is not T&G or rabbeted. Without a solid surface behind it to fasten to with fasteners or glue or both MDF would sag terribly on a ceiling.

A garden sprayer and plastic to cover the floors will be better in the end.
