I'm planning on changing out the sand in my pool filter this weekend and was thinking about throwing dirty sand in yard "fill in" some lower spots.

However I'm concerned that this will be a source of additional weeds in the backyard. Good idea or dump it elsewhere?

I've done it and it was fine. Only thing to be considerate of is making sure that there is no chlorine in it. I let my chlorine levels get low and then removed it and put it in low spots. Grass actually grew through it quickly.

I threw mine in the yard and didn't even think twice. I didn't see any weeds pop up after either.
Be careful that you don't break any of the "fingers" inside the filter when changing the sand or you end up with sand in your pool.

Not related to OP's question but: in a previous life I fixed pool equipment. I hadn't had much experience with sand filter repairs and had one to go look at. What was supposed to be a quick job took two days and I ate a ton in cost from either not knowing what I was supposed to do and breaking things.

I checked on this repair a couple days later and there was a tiny bit of sand in the pool. I vacuumed it up and it never came back. I was ready to quit if I had to remove the innards of the sand filter again. This was the days before youtube and the internet were really good resources.

I’d hate to see a weed whose seed could survive chlorine saturation.

True . . . It's kind of what I figured, but wanted double check. The river silt comments in previous threads gave me pause. Not an apples to apples comparison but no harm in confirming.

just curious - why are you changing out the sand in the filter? Are you doing it just due to the timing or is something occurring with your pool that is leading to you to want to change it out?

The reason I ask is because I have a sand filter - probably haven not had the sand changed out in 6 or so years, but everything seems fine?

Long story; its been a few years since I've changed it. I've been fighting getting my water balanced and in good shape for a couple of months and still having problems so I believe I've narrowed it down to filtration being part of the problem.
