I’ve never had a tree taken down before and am looking to have two crape myrtles removed and stumps ground. One is about 15’ and one is 20’.

They are old and scraggly, so looking to replant.

I was quoted $800 to take them both out and haul off. Just looking for a baseline on if that’s a decent price.

Best to leave the stump and treat/kill the runners from there. There was a poster here who succeeded at it. Otherwise, you'll be dealing w/ sprouts for eternity.

Neighbor had two removed and stumps ground. He has sprouts all over his front yard and get worse with each cutting.

ETA: For $800, should just buy a reciprocating saw and do it yourself.

Rent a chainsaw from Home Depot and DIY.

We cut two large ones down at work, and left the stumps. They turned into nasty looking crape myrtle bushes.
We ended up having the stumps ground, and there were sprouts popping up in a 10' circle around where the stump was. The 10' circle is the same diameter as the tree canopy was.

After two years, the sprouts are slowly going away.

$800 is about right. I had two removed last year that were about the same size. Cost $700 yo cut and grind the stumps.

Well crap. So sounds like I should not grind and spend a season killing the tree. Then remove stump.

That would work as placement of the new trees won’t be in the same exact spot.

Yeah I think someone here drilled holes in the stump and kept them filled w/ something to kill them off

Here is is:

Crepe Myrtle removal

quote:

Cut them down to the ground pretty much. Drill some holes in them. FIll the hole with a strong brush killer. Keep filling it up for a good month. try to check it everyday, if it's dry, fill it up.

I've removed at least a dozen in my yard. There was one i pulled out with my truck and was able to rip out almost the whole root system, as it was a younger one. That was very effective. One large one i had that was stump grinded still has sprouts shoot up today, and it was grinded 4 years ago.

The ones that i have cut and killed with weed killer have been successful at not resprouting up.

Price dropped to $600 without the stump grinding, so sounds like I’m in the ballpark.

Would do it myself, but near utility lines and don’t really have the time before I want to replant this weekend.

I did pretty much the same, drilled holes and filled them up and basically painted the surface of the stump with the brush killer. I never touched it again and the stump stopped sprouting.

DO NOT grind the stumps! We had 2 removed from our flowerbed and the ground the stumps. I wish the tree service guys would have known better and said it would have been a bad idea.

Like the other poster said, every single piece of root that is left in the ground will sprout a new tree. Poison the stump and ensure it's dead before you grind or pull it out.
