Pillage. How the bees? Did they rebound after swarm?

Perfect timing with that question. We opened up the box yesterday and I was going to make a post about it. We dove directly into the brood boxes. We didn’t search for too long cause I didn’t want to keep the boxes open that long, but we didn’t find our new queen. What we did find was that all of the swarm cells had been deconstructed. We also found lots of freshly laid eggs! So she’s in there, she’s mated, and she’s laying.

ETA: It’s been a little over 3 weeks since they swarmed.

What we also found was that there’s tons of honey in the second brood box, and the super was chock full of capped honey. We decided they have enough surplus at the moment and went ahead and pulled half of it out of the super for ourselves.

My wife normally likes to take a lot of pictures. Last time she was stung on the hand cause there was a bee in her pocket, so she was a little reluctant to keep pulling her phone out this time. but she did take a few.

Great news! I’ve harvested 50 lbs this weekend and going to try and harvest the other 100 or so this weekend. Was pumped we ended up with honey after a lot of bad luck in spring. Glad you have a mated queen!

I just looked at my queens I grafted this week. Pretty pumped I have something to work with.

yeah I had to. Trying to get as self sustaining as I can. Thought I did a crap job grafting, so was beyond pleased to see these today. Now I just need them to come back mated.

Well here it is. 4 frames yielded 10 pints. Never expected to get that much.

I’m jealous looking at all the bee pics

I left for 5 days and the yard longs threw a party while I was gone.

I need to give my garden some serious TLC this weekend. Rest of the tomatoes will be coming out and need to cut back the watermelon vines. They are starting to over take the peppers.

I'm debating on pulling the cucumbers. They are still producing and I don't feel like having that fight yet so may just leave them. I'll at least trim them a bit.

Holy cow! I don’t know if I did something wrong with mine or what. I got a couple of decent harvest out of them and then they just went to shite. I pulled them a couple weeks ago. And I pulled all of the tomatoes and cucumbers. I just have peppers, okra, and eggplant left.

Same. I need to get back to my daily checks. We’ve been so busy lately that I had about 30-40 over sized okra. I guess I’ll use those for seeds. But I need to get in there and start picking daily.

Have you found a good way of preserving green beans or should I just blanche and can?

Before I left for my trip, I went out and got a massive haul thinking I wouldn't be too loaded down when I got back. I intended to bring them with me and cook them on vacation but forgot them so now I've got beans coming out the wazoo.

Also, does anyone have a clue what this is? It was outside the house we rented in Alabama. Had a great strong scent and was covered in bees so I was curious.

Pillage that’s great getting honey in your first year.

Balls. I think that is Beauty Bush - Kolkwitzia amabilis. I ran into some Mountain Azalea in the Spring that looked similar.

I just pulled all of my tomatoes except cherries and my squash plants. The tomatoes had gotten pretty sick with all the rain and my neglect. My pepper plants in my raised bed aren't doing so hot. I think the crazy amount of rain is getting to them. All the peppers in the pots and in my box on my fence off the ground are doing great though. One thing I've learned is that peppers absolutely do not like wet feet. I got lazy and didn't plant okra or anything like that, so I'm pretty much just going to ride with my peppers until fall. I may plant some more tomatoes but I'm totally burnt out on them at the moment.

Weird. Did you have more than one plant? They have to be planted in sets of at least 2.

Yup. Two plants. I had them two years ago and had tomatillos by the bucket. This year? Zilch.

Sounds just like my garden at the moment. I pulled all but 1 tomato plant that still has some green tomatoes on it, but the cucumbers have stopped as well as the yard longs and if it ever stops raining enough for me to get in the garden without sinking past my ankles, I'll pull them off the trellises.

My eggplant have slowed a bit after a great harvest but are showing signs of new ones coming in and the pepper plants are doing well. Okra is still just 3 ft. tall since I got a late start getting them in the ground due to tons of rainfall in the spring, but I'm picking 20_+ pods a day and that will increase to around 50 a day before I pull them.

Very jealous of those beans and extremely jealous of that honey.

Question for everyone: is there anything you would plant right now? Beans? squash? collards? Okra is out as no one in my family, self included, eats it.

Looks like that's it. Thanks! It had an incredible smell and the bush was damn near vibrating it had so many bees on it every morning.

Man, why not? Cook them like you would asparagus and it is delicious. I've done it in a pan, air fryer, and grill. Comes out great.

If you’re in south LA, the only things I would consider planting right now are okra, southern peas, pumpkin, or watermelon (although your window for that is slowly closing.)

You can start fall tomatoes, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, mustard and collard greens. But I’d wait a few more weeks before doing that IMO.

You can always check out the planting guide linked in the OP for more ideas.

Not familiar with that. Any specific names/heirloom names? Sorry for my ignorance.
