What type of termite treatment do I need?

5 year old house that originally had slab treated. That treatment is now wearing off from what I understand.

Is Sentricon a good idea, and is $250 a year reasonable?

Yes and yes.

If you do a little research on Taurus SC (generic for Termidor) you'll see that it's widely used and thought of as being the best for perimeter soil treatment. Most termite control companies use Termidor so that tells you how confident the experts are in the product. Sentricon is the other top product.

It's important to remember that Termidor (Taurus SC) is not meant to be used as a good spot treatment but more for a soil treatment around the perimeter of a home and/or slab. It lasts up to 10 years (although some people swear it lasts longer). Its polymers bond to the soil very well and any termite that burrows through it is then "infected". It's a slow kill, which is what you want with termite colonies. The slow kill gives the termite that comes in contact with it enough time to infect the rest of the colony. Eventually (about 90 days after) the entire colony will be infected and essentially starve to death because it prevents them from being able to extract nutrients that they need from the wood they consume.

A good wood treatment is Boracare for Termites (not Boracare for mold). If sprayed on untreated wood like studs, the chemical will absorb into nearly the entire piece of wood. It prevents rot and termite issues by killing the termites who come in contact with it and try to consume the treated wood. I'm not as confident in what I'm saying regarding Boracare's effectiveness on untreated wood but you can go research it yourself to fact check me. I could be slightly wrong in how boracare for termites works for untreated wood. Taurus SC (Termidor) and how it works - I'm very confident because I've done a shite ton of research on it after having a big termite issue last year.

When I had that issue last year I had to gut my entire home office (which thankfully is not attached to my home) and treat through the slab into the soil, around the slab on the outside with Taurus SC, and I sprayed down all the studs with Boaracare for Termites. I also had Terminex come out and do their thing since I already had a contract with them on the house. Figured it couldn't necessarily hurt for them to come out and treat as well since I'm not an expert. A good bonus with the Boracare for Termites is that a day or two after spraying down the studs and interior of the walls, I had dead spiders and roaches for weeks after until drywalling and closing up the walls again. It kills everything!

I used Rick Story from Baton Rouge pest control.

He took his time and did a good job for us.

Also this is not peak season for termite control. Call around to get better pricing

It’s on Amazon but it’s not as cheap there.

The company was recommending the sentricom bait system and the $250 was the maintenance for that bait system.

They didn’t say anything about a perimeter treatment Do I need to make sure I have a perimeter treatment? Or is that only for a house that has had an issue with termites?

No, get a perimeter treatment no matter what. Your property will eventually, at some point, be impacted by termites. It’s almost a given. Therefore it’s best to have a perimeter treatment in order to stop the colony. Bait systems are nice but they’re not ideal. My detached home office had the bait treatment around it from terminix and guess what, it was still heavily impacted by termites who told that bait system to go frick itself. A perimeter treatment is best.

this. bought a house with a sentricon system. when it came up for renewal ($350), i went with termidor permiter instead. paid $500 for treatment, it's like $100/yr every year after (to keep it "under contract"). considered doing my own treatment, but decided the savings not worth the time for me.

You are allowed to go 15 years with Termidor according to the state of Louisiana. That's what I was told by my contractor. I just had mine treated after 18 years. We had no issues since that first bout with termites.

What is involved in the termidor perimeter treatment?

I can’t imagine they are trenching for $500. If they are just spraying it around the perimeter it sounds like something I could do myself.

I think I may get the sentricon system and spray termidor myself. Any tips for spraying?
