The biggest concern with steel wool when using to smooth finishes is you have to be sure to get all of the steel wool residue off the project before applying new finish.
If you don't, there is a good chance the small particles will rust under the finish and it will look like crap.
But getting it all off is not that hard a chore.

I have had success with dipping doors but not sure about cabinet doors. Don’t see why that wouldn’t work.
