Standing Seam on Existing Shingle Roof

I had some missing aspahlt shingles (6'x6') area to my existing roof from Ida. I started getting estimates for a roof replacement, and I am interested in a Standing Seam metal roof. The sales rep I talked to said they could install the standing seam panels over the existing shingles and removal of the existing shingles is not needed. Does anyone have any personal experience with having standing seam panels install over existing asphalt shingles? I am trying to see how reliable is that method.

I’m not a roofer, but why would you want to put a new roof on top of a damaged one?
I have standing seam metal roof and they tore off the shingles prior to installing.

You can do metal on top of shingles and some people will do shingles on top of shingles. Neither means it’s a great idea. The biggest issue I know of with not removing them is finding the damaged wood underneath and replacing it.
The obvious reason is to save money.

Don’t do it! As others have said, you need to inspect the substrate. Also, going over the shingles could cause oil canning. This is a waviness in the panel.
