Sprinkler head leaking.

I recently had sod replaced in my back yard. As the ground was being prepared the contractor destroyed a sprinkler head. He replaced it and laid the sod. I began watering regularly. The sod on the whole yard was initially soft but there was one area that was particularly soft. After about a month I noticed that the replaced sprinkler head continually ran after it shut off. An area of about 8’ to 10’ wide around that sprinkler head remained very soft. I had to turn the water off to stop the water from leaking.
I checked to see if there was debris keeping the value from closing and flushed the open valve. That didn’t stop the sprinkler head from leaking. I hired a sprinkler company to come out. They ended up replacing the entire valve unit. I let that dry for a day, turned on the sprinkler and it’s still leaking.
What else could you replace?
Is it just a coincidence the valve went bad when the sprinkler head was destroyed by a root cutter?
There has to be some reason that the ground within 8’ of sprinkler head continues to stay soft even though I don’t keep water running out of that sprinkler head.

unless you have another line underground for a different station i would have been 99percent sure your valve had trash on the diaphram...
i question if the new valve is faulty...you should not have to do this because they installed it but open top of new valve and mske sure they did not get dirt in the line when installing....which may now be holding the diaphram open and bleeding....
sprinkler systems ...a love hate relationship
good luck

Try installing a check valve. That was the inexpensive fix when I had a similar situation.
Sometimes a sprinkler, especially in a low area, will let water in the lines keep dripping out after shut off, and it soaks the area around it. The check valve won't let water out unless there is positive water pressure on the valve.

If the valve isn’t leaking, how’s the ground staying wet? Sounds like a valve to me.

Low head drainage...install a check valve. Check valve will hold back 2 ft of elevation so if it’s a steep area you will probably need to install check valves in heads up the hill also.

It is the lowest area in my yard and there is a drain there. I wouldn’t call the grade steep by any means.

If a check value is installed and stops the leakage can I assume i didn’t need the entire valve unit replaced?

No. You might have both a leaky valve and low head drainage.
