We have a bedroom/gameroom above our garage that has some really drastic temperature swings. I'd say it's usually 10 degrees hotter or colder than the rest of the upstairs. It doesn't help that it's also directly westward facing.

Has anyone redone the insulation in a room like this? I know it will be a big undertaking as it will need to be stripped to the studs.

Anyone have any ballpark on cost per sqft?

Also, will the foam make a big enough difference to justify it?

Following. I have a movie theater built into my attic. It has fiberglass on the walls with reflective sheets stapled over that. If AC is on its cool, once AC is off it's hot.

Do you have kneewalls or is it all roof exposure? Regardless, this will always be subject to temperature swings. It’s exposed to the worst conditions on every surface: walls, floor, and ceiling. With kneewalls, at least you should have access to the walls and could save stripping the Sheetrock. I’m not sure the foam cost, particularly retrofitting would be justified. I compared them in my new build and it wasn’t worth it. I only foamed the subfloor since it made sense with the truss system (foamed all walls of main floor).

Do you have any gas appliances in this area of the attic/garage? Water heater? If any gas appliances you can’t fully enclose with foam due to combustion air requirements. One of my water heaters is at the end of my bonus room so I couldn’t foam.

you need to drop the ceiling in garage and spray foam from underneath, 90% of all your temperature swings are because thats not insulated, they never are from my many years in experience with new home construction.

do that and that alone will most likely eliminate your entire problem

also spray foam is best cost effective when doing the entire house, small rooms here and there its not worth the cost when bat insulation is so easy and cheap to do

Tough to say but when it comes to home insulation, I always turn to RoxWol.
