Anyone have a solar generator? I'm new to that game and have been strongly considering buying one to have in addition to our portable.

I've been looking at ones around 300 Wh for minor outages. Or I might build my own.

you'd be prepared for a complete wide scale grid failure where no one can get any sort of fuel

Be good to have after a hurricane.

But those look expensive and I don't want to take the risk unless I can find a few people who can vouch for them.

I’m an electronics guy so I’ve made pretty much battery everything. DIY is 3x-5x better than anything you’ll get on the market, especially since batteryhookup dot com exists. They sell industrial grade cells for under 1/2 price of the trash grade or counterfeit stuff you’ll find in Amazon products.
Biggest I’ve made is only like 1.2kwh NMC. it is smaller than a car battery and will output 15kw (for 7 minutes) and was only like $60.
I don’t know what you’d use a solar generator for. Think 20w/sqft max. Taking a small battery outside for charging laptops, phones, speakers , etc is way easier and safer than running cords though.

Provided the sun is shining and you have enough battery capacity. A solar generator is a marketing gimmick. It is simply a solar panel or panels, a charge controller, batteries, and an invertor. The portable ones I have seen will probably be able to run your refrigerator an hour or so after dark at best.

I think they have their uses but I certainly wouldn't want to rely on one for heavy use or a critical appliance. 100W solar panels are reasonably inexpensive but you'll need several to have a decent amount of recovery power.

I have one for my CPAP. Jackery 500 with a large solar panel. Works well. Lady at my work was looking at them thinking she could run an air conditioner from one so she wouldn't need to mess around with gas. They have some capable but you would have to get something pretty massive that costs in the thousands of dollars.
