I recently received my soil test from LSU but can't get an answer from the extension office to assist me. Please help guide me through this process. I mostly need help in my backyard which is St. Aug

Grassy Weeds in the middle two pictures are dallisgrass.

Top pic is chamberbitter, middle two pics Dallisgrass, bottom pic lespedeza.

Control chamberbitter and lespedeza with MSM Turf or Celsius. Dallisgrass - dig up or spot spray or wipe/paint with glyphosate - “roundup”.

Your soil analysis results looks to be ideal for St Augustine.

ETA: Also looks like some Green Kyillinga seedheads in that bottom pic - Celsius and/or Sedgehammer to control it

Any idea where I can get ammonium sulfate? Will this work?

Ignore the fertlizer recommendation of ammonium sulfate, urea, or ammonium nitrate on the soil test report. (I'll explain why if you need me to). Those are common ingredients in retail lawn fertilizers, except the ammonium nitrate. Just buy a good general purpose lawn fertilizer, not a weed and feed.

Those recommendations are for 3 lbs of nitrogen containing fertlizer applied to the lawn over the growing season, but only 1 pound of N should be applied per application, late March/April, June and August.

If you were in Baton Rouge, I'd recommend buying a LESCO 24-2-11 lawn fertilizer from Site One Landscape Supply, and applying 4 lbs per 1000 sq ft, to provide 1 lb of N per 1,000 sq ft. Or use something similar. Since you posted a Tractor Supply photo, something like this https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/groundwork-lawn-food-24-0-4

Make another application of the fertilizer in August. Then next year make 3 applications as recommended.

Craw was right on with what he said. I do see some VBW in the pictures too. MSM or Celsius for that as well, I prefer Celsius. In the top picture did you just water or did it just rain? That is a lot of water on the ground and could cause issues if that is because of poor drainage.

In this second picture I can see where you are bringing in sod but the dallisgrass is located in the bermuda. There are some options. You can buy tribute total but it is expensive. You can buy glyphosate and water it down by about 25%. Spot treat the dallisgrass every two weeks. You can also spot treat with Celsius and sedgehammer. Spray the leaves like normal but spray the center mass until wet. Do this again two weeks later. I followed up with someone today and the dallisgrass is actually turning yellow and purple. I spot treated it again today and will follow up next week.

Thanks to all. It just rained, but I do have some issues between my house and the neighbor. Seems to stay wet

I have Dallisgrass in my back yard so thick that I have to cut every couple of days. Other than digging it up, is there anything I can spray to get rid of it?

It is centipede, just looking to knock out the Dallisgrass and then recs on what to put down to make it healthier

Are you absolutely sure it is Dallisgrass - some posters have recently posted photos of what they thought was Dallisgrass and it was Crabgrass, which is much easier to control, and others have posted photos of what they thought was “crabgrass” but it was Dallisgrass.

I have a few different types of weeds and they’re only like this in my back yard.

OK, top and bottom pics are Dallisgrass but middle picture looks like crabgrass to me. Let ronk weigh in on this - he’s better at weed ID than me. You also have some common Bermudagrass mixed in.

With crabgrass, an annual weed, in your centipede lawn you can kill it with sethoxydim, but the best control of crabgrass going forward would be to apply pre-emergent in late winter - early to mid Feb in south LA. Pre-emergent is very effective on crabgrass. Sethoxydim will also kill the Bermudagrass.

Another poster on this board has said they have good success controlling Dallisgrass with sethoxydim, but I don’t know as I’ve not seen that recommended in university extension literature. I’m going to link this paper on Dallisgrass control to read to see what might work best for you. LINK.

I know the best herbicide Tribute is crazy expensive, but there are cheaper alternatives. I don’t want to speak for ronk, but I think he is recommending mixing Celsius and Sedgehammer herbicides, two of the three ingredients in Tribute as a less expensive alternative. Dallasgrass is a perennial weed so it going to be difficult so plan for a long war, not a brief battle, to rid yourself of it if as you say you have a yard full. Now if you don’t have so much Dallisgrass, try digging it out or spot spray or wipe it with glyphosate (generic “Roundup”)

I would agree with that.

I am going to try some celcius on some Dallis in my St Aug this weekend. I’ll update with my results later.

You are right. Dallis, crab, dallis.

I am testing Celsius and Sedgehammer (I'm not a scientist or anything). Normal spray on the leaves and then spraying the center of the plant until wet. It is showing some promise. The dallisgrass is brown and yellow. I'll do a repeat application next week. I'll post pictures.

I really appreciate it guys. So I should try to mix Celsius and sledgehammer? If it works should I spread more seed or fertilize? I would say 1/2 of my back yard is covered in this. I plan on putting down a pre-emergent next year and starting a regular maintenance plan.

Mix celsius and sedgehammer but just a warning it's a strong mix. Any centipede near the center of the dallisgrass will yellow because you are spraying to wet. It is going to take more than one application for sure.

So it’s not something I should spray all over my yard? Lol
