I have a pool install finishing up in the next two weeks and will need sod. What is best this time of the year to plant?

Any time in your part of the country.. Just make sure you water faithfully this time of year. The other seasons would be easier to manage the watering because of cooler temperatures.

Whenever you get tired of dirt in your pool will be the best time.

Watering sod isn't fun in the summer, but with these afternoon showers, it's not as bad as it was last summer.

If laying sod and have plenty of sun, go Bermuda.

Do it ASAP as soon after the pool is finished. Water the sod daily to sogginess, week 1; every other day to sogginess, week 2; every 3 days to sogginess, week 3 (so twice); then water at least once weekly in the absence of rain - about 1 inch + of water. Should establish quickly in this heat provided you water deeply. No need to fertilize soon as sod will come pre-fertilized. If St. Augustine or Bermudagrass, you could fertilize in August, south Louisiana.

Good advice here given already.
I’ll add that you might want something that can be cut low. Bermuda or Zoysia.
I don’t prefer 4” St Aug by the pool.

Would rather a carpet type turf.
But before you commit to that, know you’ll be mowing it every three days if not more.

Emerald Zoysia is super thick and like a dense carpet and wonderful. It’s a grass you would want to walk in bare feet. Bermuda has many types TifGrand, Tifway for full sun. TifTuf for 5-6 hours of sun. You can plant just about any time but if you do it now you may need to water twice a day. I just put tiftuff in my partially shaded back yard and it’s a small enough area that I water manually. This heat will kill the sod while it’s still on pallet if not put down and watered fast enough.

My new Tiftuf is dying out almost completely with 5 hours of sun or less even at a skyscraper height of two inches. Super great grass though. The stuff that gets over 5 hours: I can hardly believe it’s even my own yard.

I had a friend give me a half pallet of TifGrand. Was wonderful because I cut all these trees down in my yard so the grass got full sun. Then nature grew back so fast (tulip poplars are giant weeds) and choked off the sun again and the TifGrand started to fade. Got tired of my dogs tracking in mud. So I’m trying to see if the Tuf can blend in with the grand to the places will low sun. We will see.

1.5” but just got back from 11 day trip and I usually mow more than weekly. Looked great today after getting knocked back down to 2”. Hopefully 1.5 tomorrow won’t scalp. Rest of my sunny grass is all 1” but the tiftuf is just so thick and vigorous that my mower can’t get it that low. Yard isn’t super level either.

I've had experience with centipede sod in Baton Rouge July and St Augustine in Jan. Summer needed 3 waterings a day for a week then trailing off. It was a cold wet Jan, so I had to water only once a day the 1st week when it didn't rain. Two days after laying there was a hard freeze, but the grass did just fine. Winter is my preference.

Indeed, you can lay sod in winter in the Gulf Coast region.
