My current thermostat is a battery powered Honeywell. The blue "c" wire is what is taped up in the circle. I hooked up the Amazon smart thermostat as instructed and there is no power to it. I checked with a voltmeter and there's nothing. I'm guessing something at the unit is not hooked up right?

I'm functionally regarded when it comes to electrical stuff. Other than installing light fixtures and ceiling fans I've never messed with it because I usually end up electrocuted.

From what I remember installing my Nest, you don't HAVE to hook up the common wire. Can you manually charge the thermostat before plugging it up to see if that works?

If you hooked up the common wire to the new thermostat, you like likely need to hook up the common wire on the other end to the control-circuit board in the furnace - air handler. It will be labeled on control board and next to the terminals for the other thermostat wires. I needed to do this on mine when I installed a smart thermostat. LINK

ETA: hook up the blue common wire to “B” on the new thermostat (photo) and do the same to the “C” terminal on the furnace-air handler control board.

The Amazon thermostat doesn't have a battery option unfortunately

Thanks, I'll crawl up there tomorrow morning when it's cool and see if I can figure it out.

The blue wire is probably run, but not connected to the proper power source at the unit. Check that.

+1. Thermostat wire is typically 6-8 conductors if I remember correctly so you will have unused ones in the cable. Just match the color from the control board in the furnace to the thermostat. Like others mentioned, if blue is available that’s the most common to utilize.

Can you share the Amazon thermostat you purchased? We bought Nest which was very user friendly to install, giving specific instructions on which cables to install based on the cables you have available. Nest has an internal battery that requires basically a boost before being installed completely and running off the A/C's power.

You also might have some luck on YouTube with diagrams.

I took the easy route out. I got the Amazon smart thermostat during the entergy free deal. My brother got the sensi. We swapped. The sensi works without a C wire. I probably wouldn't have climbed up into the attic until October otherwise.
