I had that problem in a half bath. Turned out to be a cracked flange on the toilet. Was allowing gas to escape. Replaced it and new wax ring and all good.

We had a similar problem in our hall bathroom area. Some days the smell was in the bathroom, other days it was in the hall area.
We put water in the sink and bath tub, but still had the smell some days. This went on for a couple of weeks. About 10 years ago, I had put in a new wax seal on the toilet. After a close inspection of the floor around the toilet, I saw a little brown on floor.
When I pulled the toilet to check the seal, I found about 1/2 of the wax was missing. Installed new seal and no more leaking gas smell.

Thanks. I can certainly replace the wax seal but the fact that when we arse water to the tub the smell goes away leads me to believe it is with the tub only. Also i can close the tub drain and seal the tub overflow vent and there is no smell at any time.
