Roots growing in Pipes

Has anyone had any experience with this? Is there a way to avoid digging up the front yard to replace the pipe?

Best case: roots are entering your pipes from the city sewer and it's the city's job to cut them out.
Worst case: roots have breached the pipe wall causing structural damage in multiple places, and your main sewer line must be replaced.
The first step is for a trustworthy licensed plumber to scope the pipe with a camera. If they won't show you the images or seem sketchy with the details, seek another plumber.
In some locales, the city will scope the pipes free of charge to determine if roots are entering from their sewer main.

I have a clay tile main drain line that has root problems about once a year. I bought a $200 drain snake machine from Harbor Freight about 10 years ago. It has saved me a bunch of money and frustration dealing with plumbers.

I have used this stuff at my previous house and it definitely worked.

I just had a plumber friend do one in BTR. If age and clay pipe is involved. Get someone to do it. They use to be an old guy in BTR, with his grandson, they did a number for me. They break up the old pipe, bury. Install new PVC pipe, easy job with the right equipment.

Yep, it costs me $300 about once a year when I call the plumber to snake it clear. I'm just going to rent the machine next time it happens.
A plumber told me he'd do the pipe replacement for $1,500 if I dug the yard up down to the pipe.

I've fought them for 20 years. I've got them whipped way down. I haven't had to have the pipes snaked in 3 years. I rotate rock salt, copper sulfate crystals, and Patriot Chemicals heavy duty Pro grade foaming root killer monthly for years and bimonthly now. . The Patriot chemical is the best stuff of it's type I've ever seen and I've used most of them. Root Bomb is good to solve immediate problems and sulphuric acid. I also use a sewer rod and sewer duck when it plugs. I can usually clear it without snaking it. I haven't done either in a couple of year's. Happy sewer war.

If it’s an old tree, will it kill the tree?

Metairie home, built in 60s. Roto rooter snaked it today for $614. They are going to scope it with a camera on Monday as well.
I’m sure it will cost $5k to dig up the yard and replace. We bought the house in 2017 and the previous owners paid a landscaper who planted the tree close to our house right by the sewer line. It has really grown over the past couple of years and I’m sure is the culprit. Never knew this would be an issue but am learning the hard way.

Sad to say, most in the NOLA area will get taken. Sad but true.
