Since adding the grill deck to my house we now want to take out 1 of the windows of the master bedroom and replace it with a door. We've gotten a couple of quotes and they are sky high, anywhere from 3k-5k for a simple replacement. if we knocked out both and did a french door it's looking 8-10k.

The window is 30x80, my idea is, find a door that fits the width with the transom window above it to take up the remaining height of the existing window. Is this something that is DIYable? I'm pretty handy and have mounted doors and windows before.

Something like this.

What type of exterior siding do you have?

It's on the back of the house so vinyl. Would just need to cut the part under the window.

Those numbers sound really high, especially for vinyl siding. You need a door, some vinyl siding manipulation, a little trim work, some drywall work and wall painting on the interior room.

DIY Project. Be careful cutting it out making sure you don't have any electrical/plumbing under the windows. We just did this last week on a building and it turns out that at some point in the past there was a door, and it had been remodeled to install a window.

Would open that area up to fit a 36" door. Not hard to do at all.

Myself, I took out a double window and single door, move power lines, reframed for French doors and install a single window. Took three days to finish everything out.

Aren't standard doors 80" tall? Why would you need a transom?

Guessing the window is 30 x 80 and doesn't go all the way down to the floor.

It shouldn't be too hard unless electrical is ran underneath the window as someone mentioned but you could cut open the sheetrock underneath the window to check before you start.

Yea, good point. My house, the top of windows are at the same height as top of doors so removing the lower part of the wall would give you the proper height for a door. I have a double window I am going to put french doors in at some point that will go out to our screened in deck.

I remembered incorrectly, standard door is 80. This is taller than 80, I would need the transom.

Rough cut in is 82 1/2" high. You will still need a header above, so you will have to open the sheetrock above.

This is the French doors I was talking about.
