I’m too cheap to buy a whole home, so my next best option is to buy a tri fuel for $2000. I will need help with wiring in a switch to make it an easy plug and play. I don’t know much about electricity and don’t want to screw anything up. Who would you recommend? Located in Gonzales

$2,000? Costco has Firman Tri Fuel 7500 running watt generators for $799.99.

For natural gas? I found a champion that has running wattage of 10,000 on Nat Gas

From the website it shows 5500 running so this one is double

The Firman is around 6,000 watts on natural gas. What are you trying to power and how big is your home?

this is the biggest trifuel i've come across. i ordered the westinghouse version of the same generator for a little cheaper, but it's gone oos everywhere. what champion are you looking at with 10k running watts on NG?

He must be looking at this one. It’s $3,000 though.

My FIL hardwired separate distinct circuits for 2 refrigerators, TV/Internet modem, den and kitchen lights. He placed several outlets near the garage door so he can snake cords under the garage door and into those outlets. He place new dedicated outlets marked Generator near the active outlets at the TV and fridges.

In summary he has a dedicated network for the generator. Works for him.

Yes it was $3000 my bad. Just trying to figure out best course of action. A whole home would be nice but I have been quoted for $12-14k by 4 different vendors. Can’t justify that price for something that happens once in a blue moon.

If you’re willing to spend the $3k, I’m sure it’s a good unit - go for it. My house is only 1700 sqft and my Firman can run lights, fridge/freezer, and two 5000 btu window units. Depending on your needs, you can save some coin with the smaller generator.

And I agree, I think for the price and likelihood of use, a portable generator on NG is the way to go vs installing a whole home.

I recommend that no one else does what his FIL did.

an inlet with an interlock is really the only answer here. You can buy some manual transfer kits and such, but it really isn't necessary, and any solution that involves running cords and extra dedicated circuits is more of a problem than a solution

Anything power related scares me and I don’t understand it. I don’t want to do anything sketchy. Unfortunately, DSLD decided to put my utilities on opposite sides of house. So I have a decision to run power to gas side or run gas to power side. I’d love to just have some type of disconnect wired to where I have a plug and play with my generator
