I’m going to be building out our outdoor kitchen this spring n our back patio. When we built we had them put in a bunch of outlets, plumbing and propane line in, so against this wall, I’ll build out counters and build in our grill and griddle. I want to protect the siding from heat and just general dirt and grime from cooking. I was thinking about getting a sheet of stainless steel for a backsplash. But I wasn’t sure if I needed to put some kind of additional heat barrier between the two or what. Any advice is appreciated!

Is the siding lap siding like weatherboards or flat stuff like T-1-11 board and batten sheets.

If a flat sheet material and the fact it's not wood but a composite cement type material, just use construction adhesive to apply the stainless to the wall to protect it. That would be no different that gluing the metal to Hardie Board used for tile work underlayment.

I'm assuming this outdoor kitchen will be a permanent addition, so just cover that area.

If it is lap siding like weatherboards, I'd use 1x4 firring strips then put some Hardie board screwed to it, then the construction adhesive to glue the stainless to it. That way you have a gap between the stainless and lap siding wall.
