I mow my parents yard for them and they got this lawn mower a couple of years ago.

Dad decided to mow a couple of weeks and ago and noticed the self propel was not working.

Went over to take a look and the belt had somehow got wedge and wouldn’t move. Took the blade off and belt cover off. Got the belt back on and now when you start it up and take off without even pulling the handle to engage self propel.

I checked and adjusted the cable and made sure that it wasn’t engaged without pulling the handle.

It’s still taking off without engaging and I have no clue what to do. Would it be the transmission for the rear drive going out that would cause this?

Could be a spring keeping it engaged. Grass clippings get pulled into the works, messes up all sorts of things unless cleaned out regularly. They really are junky mowers, my fiancée's mother bought one a few years ago and it's needed something fixed every season.

I just bought one. This happened to me the first time I used it. The self propel stopped working. I inspected the belt and it would not move. It’s in the shop now. Sucks

My guess is the cable is too tight. I know you said you checked the cable, but I have no other idea.

The cable pulls tight and engages the self propelled belt. If the belt is moving without pulling the handle, the cable is so tight that the handle doesn't need to be pulled. That's all I got.

I’m going to stop by after work and mess with it again. First thing I’m going to do is pull the cable towards the handle so the cable has so much slack, that it’s just hanging.

If it still automatically engages the self propelled, then I guess I’ll take it to a small engine mechanic because I’m all out of ideas.

Make sure the part that the cable pulls at the belt isn't stuck or doesn't have grass or sticks.

Well I put a lot of slack in the cable and actually disconnected the spring from the arm and started it up, still automatically engaged when starting.

I wouldn’t think it would be a bad belt that would cause the issue. Guess I’ll take off the drive shaft and reinstall it, since that’s really the only thing I did when I got the belt unstuck the other day.

I’m an idiot. Realized when I put the tires back on, I put the adjustment level on the wrong side. That was causing the drive shaft to push up on the transmission, in turn engaging the belt.

Once I got the level changed to the right side, it’s working perfectly fine now.

I have one that is 12 years old. Last year I had to have it serviced and it runs fine. It’s the best mower I’ve ever had.

I’ve had my toro for 6yrs now and it has been flawless. And I’m religious about mowing once a week even into late fall.
