quote:I typed 4-ton in my post but it's a 5-ton. Not sure why I got it mixed up. But I wish I had a friend in the industry! Luckily, my systems are old but are working fine. I was just curious as to what I'd be looking at if we did want to replace them. I figure the Lennox quote would be the highest of the brands so I know the max amount.
Just had a 5 ton Goodman (R-32) installed for $9800.00.

Apparently you can’t read. My post originally said “new units.” A condenser isn’t a unit. A compressor isn’t a unit. Of course you can still buy a 410a compressor or condenser. I can still buy an R22 compressor. But neither of those are units they are parts.
Better tell the EPA it’s not a condensing unit because that is exactly what they are and exactly as worded. A condensing UNIT is a “component” of a system not a part. And that component can be replaced forever.

The EPA considers a condensing unit as a part.
And so does Carrier:

In a light commercial split, is my fan
coil or condensing unit considered a
system all by itself?
No. They are considered as components of a system because they have to be installed together on site to operate.

Why are y'all arguing over essentially the same thing? Both of you are arguing you can replace a condensing unit with a 410 one as long as they are available. Who gives a crap if it is considered a "part" or a "unit" or a "component"? Neither of you is saying it is a complete system so let it go.

Neighbor recently was quoted $10k for replacing both inside and outside components of his 3.5 ton system.

I could be wrong but I think the main difference between the 410a units and 454b is a different txv valve. Pretty sure you could swap a 410a valve into a new 454 system and have a 410 system as most (all?) parts are identical.

do u have an AC recommendation in BR?
Alex AC - out of Prairieville. Mostly does commercial, but if he isn’t too busy he will do residential. It is busy season for him, but if you can wait a little while it’s worth it. He and his son do all the work. He will be honest and try to fix before selling new units. Been using him for years at all sites.
