Long story short: discovered that a section of my yard covered large bushes was actually my neighbor’s bushes overgrown onto my property. I’m tearing it up and preparing to put something of my own there. Area is about 8’x30’ of space that faces north.

I’m almost done removing most of the old plants and weeds that took over the area. What would be the next steps in developing out the area? The plants I mentioned are skinny trees about the thickness of a quarter that do not look good at all.

I would probably put a two raised garden beds that drain back into the soil below, with wild flowers along the outer edge of the area.

How does a space "face north"?
I am assuming you aren't on some steep mountainous terrain.

Your plan sounds fine. Two biggest issues are how much sun and drainage. If here is a fence or structure behind the area, it may be too shady for a vegetable garden. If you or your neighbor's yard is graded with low sides, it will be wet. The raised beds should improve the water problem. Shop around for a wildflower seed mix that matches your situation.

Sounds like the neighbors trees are on the south side of where he is planting.

Sorry looking back I realize it sounds goofy. It's in the southern section of my yard, with shade from trees behind it.

This is what I meant by "facing north" in my original text. Sun will be directly hitting this section of the yard from 10am - roughly 4pm when you take into account the trees behind and the fencing to the side of it.

Following up. I should have it ready tomorrow to put new soil and set up some planters. Is there any specific soil to use for wildflower seeds? I’ve read i can just throw them into the ground and water them in.

We have a couple herbs growing in mini pots now but I’ll probably start something new in one of the planters to avoid messing with any root systems and mixing things around unless that’s okay to do.

Assuming you are seeding wildflowers native to your area, no special topsoil is necessary.
