re: Portable Generator to Run Home AC

Just to give everyone an update on what I did and how much it cost me. I ended up buying a champion 10,000 watt 30 AMP tri fuel generator. Electrician installed the interlock for me and ran all my electrical to plug my generator into. The way my house was wired when I built wouldn’t allow me to run my AC on a portable. So I ended up buying a 12000 btu portable AC unit that I can just roll into a room and exhaust out window if power goes out. My entire house runs off the generator except for my Central air. My patio NG gas hookup provides enough gas to run the generator, so I didn’t have to run any additional gas line.
All in including electrical work, generator, and portable AC cost me $2,100.00. Tip on generator and AC unit. Search Facebook marketplace. I saved 1,000.00 total on the generator and portable AC unit. Both units were never used and the seller was willing to negotiate. Best $2,100 I’ve ever spent. After doing this, I can’t see spending 12-15K on a whole home standby.

What size gas line was it?

Good point for OP. Make sure you test this OP. You can get a larger gas hook up installed if need be. A nat gas line for a grill or fireplace is often not enough for a larger generator.
But your set up OP is honestly the most realistic for the avg upper middle income southerner to have.

1/2” line coming out of wall. 1” line leaving meter. Haven’t got in the attic to see how far the 1” line runs before teeing of to 1/2”
We did a test run yesterday and the generator ran the whole house with zero issues from the 1/2” patio gas line.
