I plan to have a new 20 KW generator installed. The generator provider says that it is necessary to be 18" from our home and 36" from the property line to obtain the necessary permits for the installation. The generator is 26" wide and the total distance from my exterior wall to the property line is approximately 50". IMHO there is adequate room for the generator maintaining the 18" distance from my home but I don't have the necessary distance from the property line. I'm in East Baton Rouge Parish but not in the City of Baton Rouge. The property line is adjacent to my neighbor's driveway. Have any of you had to address this and is there any possible type of workaround. TIA for your suggestions.

You'll just need a variance from the permit office. Happens all the time.

You have to request a variance but I don't how likely that is being next to a driveway. Also, now you have to submit plans, get rejected, and then appeal for a variance.

No other possible locations?

How far away is the neighbors house? If it’s as close as yours’ to the property line I don’t see anyway anyone would allow it. I’d be pissed if a neighbor put a generator 10’ from my house personally especially a whole house that never moves and could be running for days.

You don’t have any other options?

My neighbors house is approximately 15 feet from where the generator will be located.

Your price is about the same as I will be paying for the 20 KW Kohler. Will you be able to obtain permitting to place it less than three feet from my neighbor's property line?

Honeywell is NOT equal to Kohler.

You can request a variance, but it might not be granted if the next door neighbor complains.

Can you move the generator location somewhere else?

Talk to your neighbor. In the heat of the aftermath of a hurricane/no electricity I doubt your neighbors will care about the hum of your generator. We had a whole house generator installed 2 years ago and it’s not that loud. They’ve come a long way since the generators I remember as a kid. If your neighbor has a generator, he won’t notice the sound from yours when his is humming too. If he doesn’t hafe his own, offer him some perks- putting his food in your freezer. Having a beer etc at your place to cool off whenever he’s about to lose his mind. Or gumbo in the case of an epic freeze. All this assuming your neighbor is cool. If I was your neighbor, I wouldn’t care about your generator as long as it wasn’t an eyesore....

Also, i don’t recall getting a permit for ours. We are in EBR. I’m the wife though. My husband may have gotten a permit.

I’d be more concerned about carbon monoxide poisoning personally. I wouldn’t want one that close to windows.

Anyone promising anything from the AHJ without officially submitting your permit pack is wish casting. I can’t promise what they’ll say. No one can until you try it.
